General Statement of Duties

The Orthopedic Physician Assistant (PA) is responsible for providing high-quality patient care under the supervision of an orthopedic physician. Duties include conducting physical examinations, compiling patient medical data, ordering diagnostic tests, and performing therapeutic procedures such as injections, casting, suturing, wound care, and infection management.

The PA is expected to maintain accurate records, dictate discharge notes within 24 hours, and sign off on consults within 48 hours. All PAs are responsible for ensuring daily completion of assigned duties and expectations as outlined below.

  • All time off must be approved by the supervising physician.

  • PAs are expected to coordinate coverage for any approved absences.

  • Standard schedule is five days per week, with time off provided for weekend call coverage.

Responsibilities / Work Requirements

Surgery

  • First assist in the OR (hospital and surgical center)

  • Ensure OR setup is complete; present by 7:00 a.m.

  • Available to assist for the duration of cases

  • Conduct postoperative patient follow-up calls within 24 hours

Office

  • Assist physician during office hours

  • Evaluate patients, conduct interviews, and order x-rays

  • Provide patient education, PT recommendations, and perform injections

  • Apply/remove casts and bracing as needed

  • See patients with acute problems and review cases with supervising physician

Qualifications

Experience

  • Orthopedic experience required

Education

  • Graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant program

Licensure

  • Active Connecticut PA license, in good standing

  • Conditional employment may be considered for recent graduates pending licensure exam

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong clinical knowledge in orthopedic medicine

  • Ability to analyze, interpret, and apply clinical, technical, and scientific data

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; able to respond effectively to patients, staff, and regulatory agencies

  • Proficiency in patient documentation and medical recordkeeping

  • Ability to apply mathematical concepts (fractions, ratios, percentages, etc.) to practical medical scenarios

  • Strong reasoning skills for problem-solving and clinical decision-making

Physical Demands

  • Regularly required to use hands, communicate effectively, and listen attentively

  • Frequently required to stand, walk, and reach with arms/hands

  • Occasionally required to sit, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl

  • Must be able to lift/move up to 10 pounds regularly

  • Vision requirements include close, distance, and color vision

Salary : $100,000 - $110,000
