What You’ll Do
- Conduct pre-operative assessments, review medical histories, and ensure readiness for surgery
- Start IVs, administer medications, and follow anesthesia guidelines
- Provide attentive post-anesthesia care, monitor vital signs, and manage pain and nausea
- Educate patients and families on pre- and post-operative instructions
- Collaborate with surgeons, anesthesia providers, and fellow nursing staff
- Maintain accurate documentation and uphold all safety and infection control standards
- Support smooth patient flow in a fast-paced ASC environment
- Strong Assessment & Critical Thinking Skills ASC nurses must quickly assess patients pre-op and recognize subtle post-anesthesia changes. Fast, accurate clinical judgment is essential since patients move through the perioperative process rapidly.
- Comfort With Fast-Paced, High-Efficiency Workflow ASCs run on tight schedules. A great ASC RN thrives in an environment with quick turnovers, structured routines, and efficient patient flow.
- Excellent Communication Skills Clear, calm communication with surgeons, anesthesia providers, patients, families, and the surgical team is critical—especially when giving instructions or explaining recovery information.
- Patient-Centered, Reassuring Presence Patients come in and go home the same day, often feeling anxious. A strong ASC RN provides reassurance, comfort, and clear education in a short period of time.
- Strong IV and Medication Administration Skills Starting IVs efficiently, administering pre-op meds, and managing PACU medications safely are core responsibilities.
- Team-Oriented Attitude ASC staffing is typically lean; teamwork is everything. The best ASC RNs jump in wherever needed and support the entire perioperative flow.
- Adaptability & Multitasking Schedules change, cases add on, and patient needs vary. A great ASC RN can pivot smoothly while staying organized.
- Commitment to Safety & Compliance Knowledge of infection control, ASC regulations, and anesthesia safety standards is essential for maintaining a high-quality environment.
- Experience in Acute or Critical Care Settings Backgrounds in PACU, ICU, ER, or OR often translate well due to strong monitoring and recovery skills.
- Positive Attitude & Professionalism ASCs value a calm, friendly, reliable presence because the patient experience is highly visible and fast-paced.
- Current RN license
- Minimum 1–2 years of experience in Pre-Op, PACU, ICU, or ER (ASC experience preferred)
- BLS, ACLS
- Strong clinical judgment, communication skills, and patient-care focus
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team
- Competitive pay and benefits
- Predictable daytime hours, no nights or major holidays (adjust as needed)
- Supportive work environment with a focus on safety and quality care
- Opportunities for professional growth
