General Description of Position:
The Sterilization Technician plays a crucial role in ensuring the cleanliness, assembly, and sterilization of instruments, hardware, and special supplies to meet the needs of the procedure room and physician/surgeon. This position includes training staff on proper sterilization techniques and assisting in the procedure room as needed to maintain high standards of hygiene and efficiency.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Sterilization and Maintenance:
- Clean, wrap, and sterilize instruments and equipment according to established protocols.
- Monitor and document autoclave testing and sterilization logs accurately.
- Properly assemble and inspect instrument trays to ensure functionality.
Communication and Coordination:
- Communicate equipment and instrument needs to the Director and Material Manager.
- Facilitate the turnover of the procedure room/O.R. by efficiently retrieving and processing instruments between cases.
- Work with OR staff to update preference sheets as needed.
Training and Compliance:
- Train staff in proper sterilization techniques and autoclave usage.
- Utilize MSDS manual, Hazardous Communication Plan, and follow CMS/JCAHO standards in daily activities.
- Adhere to proper disposal guidelines for sharps according to state and OSHA regulations.
Inventory and Cost Management:
- Restock procedure room/O.R. and identify supplies that need reordering.
- Implement effective cost reduction practices and minimize wastage of disposable supplies.
- Inspect instrumentation for wear and tear, recommending repairs or replacements.
Operational Support:
- Perform routine maintenance of washer and sterilization equipment.
- Operate sterilization equipment safely and accurately.
- Demonstrate correct care, setup, cleaning, and handling of all equipment.
General Responsibilities:
- Pull cases daily according to preference sheets if needed.
- Plan and implement effective procedures to maintain a well-organized and safe working environment.
- Perform any other related duties as required or assigned.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Specialized training or on-the-job education in relevant skill areas (e.g., CRCST program, surgical technologist program).
- 12 to 18 months of related experience and/or training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
- CPR Certification
Preferred Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
- Surgical Technologist Certification
- Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST)
- Experience as an Orthopedic Technician
Software Skills:
- Basic proficiency in 10-Key, word processing, and typing.
This role requires the ability to work independently as a surgical tech/central sterile technician without close supervision, ensuring that all instruments and equipment meet the highest standards of cleanliness and functionality.
