Job Summary
The Industrial Painter applies a wide range of liquid industrial coatings including single, two, and three-coat systems to carbon-steel, stainless-steel, and aluminum parts in strict accordance with OEM and customer specifications. By properly washing, prepping, and finishing each component, the painter ensures every product meets exacting standards for appearance, corrosion resistance, and durability.
Education and Experience
- High-school diploma or GED
- 2 years of industrial spray-painting experience, preferred
- Forklift experience
Skills
- Familiarity with epoxy and polyurethane systems
- Working knowledge of mixing ratios, viscosity cups, mil-thickness gauges, and surface-profile standards
- Ability to read and interprete engineering drawings and safety data sheets
- Precise hand-eye coordination and attention to detail
- Basic math skills for proportioning and measuring paints and catalysts
- Familiarity with lean manufacturing, 5S, and continuous improvement principles is a plus
- Strong communication and teamwork
Work Context
- Stand, walk, bend, and reach for prolonged periods
- Lift and maneuver up to 50 lbs
- Tolerate exposure to paint fumes, airborne particulates, elevated ambient temperatures in dry booths, and varying noise levels (with proper PPE provided)
Primary Job Duties
Surface Preparation
- Read and interpret work orders, blueprints, and coating specifications
- Clean, grind, or chemically treat metal surfaces to remove scale, rust, oil, and weld spatter
- Mask or plug threads, mating surfaces, and critical dimensions that must remain uncoated
Coating and Curing
- Mix and adjust solvent, water-based primers, and topcoats to specific viscosity, ration, and pot life
- Set up and operate HVLP, conventional air, air-assisted airless spray equipment
- Apply primer, intermediate, and finish coats to achieve required film build, coverage, and aesthetic standards
- Monitor flash, dry, and cure times, operate ambient, or low-temperature dry booths/ovens as required
Quality and Documentation
- Inspect coated parts with wet-film and dry-film thickness gauges, adhesion testers, and visual standards, rework as necessary
- Record lot numbers, VOC usage, film-build reading, and environmental conditions
- Tag, palletize, or hang finished parts for movement to the next operation or shipping
Safety and Maintenance
- Follow OSHA, PPE, and hazard communication requirements for flammable and toxic materials
- Perform daily spray-booth filtration checks, gun and pump cleaning, and preventative maintenance on application equipment
- Participate in 5S, lean, and continuous-improvement initiatives
