What are the responsibilities and job description for the Environmental Scientist/Chemist position at ORSANCO?
ORSANCO is an Interstate water pollution control agency that seeks a qualified individual to assist in the
operation and maintenance of volatiles organics monitoring instrumentation used for detection of chemical
pollutants in the Ohio River.
ORSANCO’s Organics Detection System (ODS) is a network of instrumentation positioned along the Ohio
River and major tributaries that is designed to screen for volatile pollutants that may have contaminated
waterways. The instruments comprise of Gas Chromatographs (GCs) and Mass Spectrometers (MS) for the
detection of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC’s). The Environmental Scientist for this program assists in
the operation and maintenance of the ODS, Emergency Response, and Source Water Protection programs.
This position is hands on and requires a working knowledge of laboratory instrumentation, pneumatic,
electrical, and computer systems. ORSANCO is headquarted in Cincinnati, Ohio. Overnight travel along the
Ohio River (Pittsburgh, PA to Paducah, KY) is required as necessary.
Candidate should possess a Bachelor’s Degree with an emphasis in chemistry or environmental studies.
Individuals holding a certificate or related Associates Degree working with analytical instrumentation, strong
mechanical aptitude, and current related work experience will be considered. A valid Driver’s License and
clean driving record are required for consideration. Ability to travel 30-50% required.
Salary and Benefits commensurate with experience. Starting Salary Range: $42,000-$46,000.

Core Job Duties:
Organics Detection System
Maintain operational status of system instrumentation- hardware and software
Electronic data retrieval, data review, data entry
Order consumable supplies (gases, standards, etc.)
Train and assist operators at host sites (Travel may be necessary)
Emergency Response
Maintain staff on-call duty schedule for spill notification
Maintain Emergency Response Directory and Resource Manual
Coordinate and participate in meetings
Maintain emergency response monitoring equipment
Field response during an emergency event
Other Tasks:
Prepare presentations & provide Status Updates to ORSANCO Committees
Participate in Source Water Protection & Emergency Response Meetings
Asist technical staff in troubleshooting other instrumentation and equipment
Other duties as assigned
Salary : $42,000 - $46,000
