SUMMARY: The Assistant Principal (Middle School) serves as a management employee, assists the principal in the conduct of overall administrative duties and acts as administrator-in-charge in the absence of the principal.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Supervises and evaluates classified and certificated staff.
Coordinates, with the principal, school site student assessment and performance standards.
Chairs specific school committees for curriculum, student discipline and student study teams and displays a broad general knowledge of middle school instructional and curricular issues.
Coordinates the site SARB referral process, PASS (Probation And School Services) program and other similar programs.
Exhibits a thorough understanding of the psychological and physiological development of the middle school student and maintains a positive rapport with all students.
Supervises, coordinates, initiates, and attends student council and extra-curricular activities.
Handles student discipline matters, monitors the lunchroom and play areas, and helps to maintain a positive school climate.
Counsels with parents and/or students and assists, when desired, in conferences with teachers and parents regarding academic or behavioral matters.
Promotes school activities and programs which contribute to a positive school climate, good public relations and full understanding of the district's educational offerings.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Assists in the supervision of all certificated and classified employees at the school site. Is responsible to the principal in assisting with the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of the staff and instructional program of the school. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; and addressing complaints and resolving problems. Supervises the overall conduct of participants and spectators at all athletic events.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: Master's degree (M. A. or M.S.) required; five years teaching experience at the K-8 level; a valid California Administrative Services Credential; successful experience in staff development and educational leadership; middle school experience preferred.
LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret the most complex documents. Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints. Ability to write and speak using original or innovative techniques or style. Ability to make effective and persuasive presentations on controversial or complex topics to top management, public groups, and/or boards of trustees. Ability to maintain confidentiality.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
REASONING ABILITY: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems. Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, musical notes, etc.,) in its most difficult phases. Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables. Ability to assert self, think clearly, and display leadership initiative in volatile situations.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES: A keen awareness and sensitivity to the unique racial diversity of the Oroville area. Must possess thorough knowledge of the laws pertaining to student conduct. Must exhibit educational leadership and skill while working with all students especially at-risk youth and disciplinary cases. Is able to adapt to a variety of situations and remains flexible while dealing with many issues and individuals or groups.
