What are the responsibilities and job description for the Experienced/Certified Veterinary Technician position at Oronoque Animal Hospital?
Hardworking, friendly, motivated, team player wanted! A well-established and high-quality general practice is looking for an experienced/certified veterinary technician to join our team. We are a multi-doctor, full service hospital that prides itself on providing exceptional veterinary care. Our hospital boasts an enjoyable environment with great leadership and excellent support staff. This is a full-time or part-time position and rotating weekend shifts will be required.
Responsibilities and Tasks:**
- Veterinary technicians assist veterinarians in the care of animals. They may perform an initial evaluation of the animal's condition, clean and wrap wounds, check vital statistics, collect samples, review vaccination records, prepare vaccines according to our vaccine protocol, and administer medication. They also perform basic lab work, including urinalysis and blood tests, and may assist with procedures such as teeth cleaning. Monitor patients under anesthesia and induce anesthesia and intubate patients if needed. Initiate emergency procedures, maintain pharmacy records, and controlled drug, anesthesia, fecal, and heartworm test logs.
- Veterinary technicians may also be required to help during patient examinations and surgical procedures by restraining animals when necessary, stocking examination and surgery rooms with supplies, sterilizing tools and ensuring that equipment is in working order. Veterinary technicians also communicate with pet owners and update patient files. Veterinary technicians often work Saturdays/Sundays and may periodically be asked to work 10-11 hours a day.
- Veterinary technicians must have excellent communication skills, so that they may interact with pet owners and coworkers. They must have an understanding of animal behavior and strong clinical skills in order to properly evaluate an animal's condition and provide treatment. They must be detail-oriented and well-organized so that they may take medical histories, carry out instructions, document patient statistics and update records. It's also essential that they enjoy working with animals and have the ability to comfort, handle and restrain large and small pets.
- Veterinary technicians are responsible for the overall maintenance of the hospital, cleaning and straightening exam rooms to prepare for incoming patients. Remove sources of offensive odors; empty trash if necessary. Check floors, walls, doors, and counters, and sweep or clean them as needed to remove hair, body fluids, and dirt. Using aseptic procedures, draw up vaccines and/or injections that doctors will administer. Utilize a task list for the sterilization and cleaning of the hospital.
- Veterinary technicians must follow the practice’s policies and protocols. Dispose of used needles and syringes and other sharp objects as set forth by the practice’s policy and OSHA standards. Assist with routine exam-room procedures as requested. Lay out and/or set up instruments that doctors will use during ophthalmic, otic, oral, and/or skin examinations, as determined by the patients’ presenting complaints, prior to the doctors’ arrivals in rooms.
- Veterinary technicians may also be responsible for recording doctors’ and technicians’ notes in patients’ computer records or on paper records. Check files for completeness of notes, charges, callbacks, before refiling. Ensure that patient records include, current patients’ weights, technicians'/doctors' notations, and brief history prior to doctors' examination. Measure and record each patient’s weight, temperature. Answer questions and educate clients about basic pet care and procedures including nutrition; internal and external parasite control; immunization protocols; the administration of topical, oral, otic, and ophthalmic medications; spay and neuter procedures; and behavior and training
Required Capabilities and Experience:**

- Ability to be confident around pets (i.e., dogs, cats, birds)-Must be at least 18 years old to perform duties involving radiography (x-ray) and exposure to radioactive substances.
- Experienced/Certified technician (2 years in field).
- Must be able to lift 40lbs, work on feet all day, and write legibly.
Required Education:**
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- College course work or college degree a definite plus
- Certification/License/Schooling in Veterinary Technology is highly preferred
*2 years or more experienced/certified veterinary technician experience required**
*Proficient with medical records software, experience with IDEXX Cornerstone Practice Management System a plus.**
