The Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office (OPSO), New Orleans, Louisiana, provides the care, custody, control and rehabilitation of inmates. The General Maintenance Technician (GMT) position is located at Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office and reports to the Sanitation Manager. The incumbent is expected to maintain a state of the art, exceptionally clean and sanitized facility by implementing improvements and assuring that all cleaning and maintenance work is completed both inside and outside of the jail facility.




JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Primary Job Duties & Functions:

  • To ensure all areas of the facility are clean and in good working order.
  • Clean all interlocks, receiving hallways, roll out dressing rooms, roll-out hallway breakroom, holding tank, attorney visit booths, roll call hallway, employee breakroom and restrooms, Travis hill school (when accessible), all multi-purpose rooms, interview rooms medical, mental health etc. We are responsible for everything outside of the housing units.
  • Pass out 5-gallon water to each pod
  • Conduct a jumper exchange twice a week
  • Conduct a blanket and sheet exchange once a month
  • Strip, buff and wax the floors
  • Assist the pest control technician and address any issues that may exist
  • Assist TDC/TMH with any laundry items needed and/or cleaning supplies
  • Passing out gain pods

  • Cleaning and organizing all storage closets by the freight elevators
  • Wipe down and disinfect all metal handrails, elevator buttons, all pod door handles.
  • Clean off feed up carts and place garbage bags on each cart for trash breakdown.
  • Pull trash from trash cans and replace them with fresh garbage bags and supply large garbage bags and gloves to all unit managers.
  • Mop floors, sweep, clean toilets, hand sinks.
  • Pass out the weekly supplies.
  • Sweep and mop floors hallways leading to the freight elevators.
  • Check and refill as needed soap dispensers, hand sanitizer dispensers and paper towel dispensers
  • Retrieve all feed up trays from the interlock
  • Load all silverback units with empty feed up trays and push to the loading docks for the kitchen staff to pick up.
  • Complete meal service breakdown with a complete trash run, once feed up carts are empty, they are cleaned and sanitized and placed back on the floor for the next feed-up.
  • Retrieve dirty laundry, place it in the bin and bring it out to the dock for pick -up.
  • Refill all chemical dispensers on the pods and inside of the storage closets and documents if dispensers are in proper working order.
  • Clean up biohazard spills (if occur in the interlock or common areas) PPE will be provided.
  • Answer all grievance/request for t-shirts, shorts etc.
  • Once a week the dock must be scrubbed and cleaned.
  • Assist with biohazard spills and clean-up that occur outside of the housing units.
  • Dumpsters should be free of any debris on the grounds.
  • Supplies passed out and signatures obtained from pod deputy (toilet paper, soap, toothbrush and toothpaste)
  • Prepare roll-in kits for incoming offenders.
  • Prep bins for laundry exchange.
  • Inspect the clean laundry for any issues (wet, soil etc.)
  • Clean up water spills and flooding.
  • Clean the kitchen area located on the 2nd floor in OJC.
  • Clean elevator tracks.
  • Take weekly inventory of all supplies and cleaning chemicals
  • Any other miscellaneous cleaning (ex. wiping down all door handles, buttons, metal railings in the circle and hallways etc.)
  • Clean the warden’s office, the scanner area and the employee locker rooms.
  • Attend education and trainings presentations on cleaning and chemical usage presentations held by Sanitation Manager.

  • Attend classes on proper biohazard clean-up procedures and how to properly use the approved cleaning chemicals.
  • Monitor building security and safety by performing such tasks as locking doors after operating hours and checking electrical appliances to ensure that hazards are not created
  • Clean and service restrooms with mops and disinfectants
  • Move heavy equipment and furniture.
  • Identify and report possible repairs.
  • Keep areas of the parking lot and landscaping areas free of trash.
  • Practice clean as you go techniques to maintain a clean work area.
  • Stacking chairs, moving tables.
  • Sanitizing mattresses before being placed in the clean mattress closet.
  • Unloading and folding clean laundry.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Job-related environmental factors: The employee routinely works in an indoor environment but will occasionally work in outdoor weather conditions. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts; in high, precarious places; and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold, extreme heat, and vibration. The employee works a significant amount of time inside a detention center, dealing daily with inmates. While good behavior is expected of the inmates, some contact may be had with inmates who are or may be violent or have a mental illness. Working conditions can be highly stressful.


Physical demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; talk or hear. The employee must occasionally lift or move office products and supplies, up to 50 pounds.
