SUMMARY 

The Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office (OPSO), New Orleans, Louisiana, provides the care, custody, control and rehabilitation of inmates. We are committed to providing the highest level of service and security to the court systems, the execution of court mandates, and the protection of individuals’ rights and freedoms. The Attorney advises and represents Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office (OPSO) in relation to their legal rights in civil and criminal cases. Their duties include meeting with the Chief Legal Officer to discuss the various aspects of OPSO cases, performing research to gather pertinent information for each case and attending all pretrial hearings. Work to resolve disputes for OPSO, represent OPSO at hearings in a court of law. 


JOB RESPONSIBILITIES 

Primary Job Duties & Responsibilities: 

• Provides legal support and guidance in civil litigation against OPSO. 

• Research and investigate the details of a case on behalf of OPSO.  

• Gather evidence to be used in a trial to defend OPSO against a lawsuit. 

• Meeting with OPSO at the remand or office to critically discuss the pending charges and strategize on how best to defend OPSO. 

• Communication with OPSO to understand their legal concerns and needs to help provide them with essential pieces of advice. 

• Strategizing on how to resolve OPSO cases in a favorable and cost-effective manner. 

• Advising OPSO about legal options and making them know the possible outcomes or threats. 

• Representing the Sheriff in criminal legal proceedings. 

• Staying informed about any current legislation. 

• Conducting depositions. 

• Preparing legal documents such as dispositions, pleadings and contracts in a timely and accurate manner. 

• Collecting retainers and executing contracts. 

• Draft pleadings 


REQUIREMENTS AND ABILITIES

• Provides legal support and guidance in civil litigation against OPSO. 

• Meeting with OPSO at the remand or office to critically discuss the pending charges and strategize on how best to defend OPSO 

• Communication with OPSO to understand their legal concerns and needs to help provide them with essential pieces of advice

• Advising OPSO about legal options and making them know the possible outcomes or threats 

• Representing the Sheriff in criminal legal proceedings 

• Staying informed about any current legislation 

• Preparing legal documents such as dispositions, pleadings and contracts in a timely and accurate manner 

• Collecting retainers and executing contracts 

• Skilled in interpreting evidence. 

• Ability to produce detailed reports with minimal information.  

• Proficient in MS Office and databases. 

• Strong analytical skills. 

• High levels of integrity and confidentiality.  

• Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills. 

• Ability in decision-making and problem-solving. 

• Excellent organizational and leaderships skills. 


REQUIRED SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES

• Possess a Juris Doctoral degree from a school of law accredited by the American Bar Association. 

• Minimum of five years of experience as a practicing criminal or civil defense lawyer. 

• Licensed to practice in Louisiana 

• Ability to work on a case independently 

• Ability to work with a team of attorney to develop strategies for a case 

• Ability to handle a high caseloads 

• Organizing and prioritizing 

• Problem-solving skills 

• Teamwork 

• Ability to meet deadlines 

• Ability to communicate in writing and verbally effectively 

• Advanced Communication Skills

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed primarily in an office environment within a secure correctional facility. The position may require travel to vendor locations, warehouses, construction sites, government offices, and professional conferences.

Availability outside normal business hours may occasionally be required to address emergencies, critical operational needs, or major procurement activities.  

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, 

handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; talk or hear. The employee must occasionally lift or move office products and supplies, up to 15-20 pounds
