Experienced Staff Investigator

Orleans Indigent Defender
New Orleans, LA Full Time
POSTED ON 12/28/2025
AVAILABLE BEFORE 2/28/2026

OPD is seeking an experienced investigator to join our Investigation Division.

The Orleans Public Defenders Office provides holistic, community-based representation in New Orleans. We represent thousands of people each year utilizing a client-centered team model that puts the client first and takes a 360-degree approach to our advocacy and representation. We recognize our clients are unique individuals and work to address their needs both in the court and out. Our diverse staff includes adult and juvenile attorneys; social workers; client, youth and parent advocates; investigators, and administrators—all working together for equal justice for our clients, their families, our community, and a better New Orleans. In short, we protect innocence, defend the Constitution, demand justice, and hold power accountable.

WHAT YOU’LL DO:

Staff investigators do the essential work of investigating misdemeanor and felony criminal cases in Orleans Parish Criminal District Court, Municipal Court, and Juvenile Court. An investigator’s work directly impacts the outcome of a client’s pending criminal case while increasing the quality of representation and meeting our mission and vision. Staff investigators work with attorneys to do the comprehensive and independent investigation that every client is entitled to by law. This leads to the timely progression of cases through the criminal justice system and less time innocent clients sit in jail awaiting their day in court.

Investigators, in conjunction with attorneys, carry out all aspects of criminal defense investigation—both field and office related activities—and will frequently assist with other aspects of case and trial preparation. Daily tasks will vary based on the type of case, investigative tasks required, and the stage of the case (e.g., pre-acceptance, motions hearing, trial, or sentencing).

More specifically, an investigator’s duties may include:

  • Surveillance and Canvassing: Locate and secure surveillance footage, photographs, and other physical or digital evidence from businesses, residences, and public agencies.
  • Witness Canvassing and Interviews: Identify, locate, and interview potential eyewitnesses and earwitnesses; document statements and assist attorneys in witness preparation.
  • Records and Background Research: Use investigative databases and other resources to locate individuals, verify information, and obtain relevant records such as police reports, phone data, or employment files.
  • Crime Scene Review: Revisit and document crime scenes to assess law enforcement findings, photograph conditions, and identify additional evidence or alternative explanations.
  • Investigation Documentation: Prepare clear, detailed investigative memoranda, reports, and timelines summarizing findings for attorney review and case strategy.
  • Exhibit and Case Preparation: Develop trial exhibits, visual aids, and other materials to assist attorneys in presenting evidence effectively.
  • Case File Management: Review, organize, and maintain investigation case files and evidentiary materials to ensure accuracy, chain of custody, and accessibility.
  • Collaboration and Testimony: Work closely with attorneys and experts to develop defense strategies and, when required, testify in court regarding investigative work and findings.
  • Professional Obligations: Maintain confidentiality, high ethical standards, and a mission-driven approach to criminal defense work.
  • Perform other duties or projects as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Two years of professional experience in public defense investigative work
  • Demonstrated commitment to working with and serving indigent clients and people from diverse cultural backgrounds
  • Willingness to do field work is a must.
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize, and manage a variety of tasks with competing deadlines
  • Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate across divisions and with coworkers
  • Good (non-legal) research skills are necessary.
  • Access to a reliable and insured vehicle
  • Possess a valid driver’s license
  • Fluency in Spanish or Vietnamese preferred

COMPENSATION:

  • This is a full-time position.
  • Salary: $45,000–$93,000, commensurate with experience.
