Safety Intern – Marine & Heavy Civil Construction

POSITION SUMMARY

Orion is seeking a motivated Safety Intern to join our Health, Safety & Environmental (HS&E) team. This internship provides hands-on exposure to construction safety practices, field operations, safety training, regulatory compliance, reporting, and risk management within a large construction organization.

Orion is a leading specialty construction company serving the infrastructure, industrial, and commercial markets. Our operations include marine and heavy civil construction—such as ports, marine terminals, bridges, pile driving, and waterfront infrastructure—as well as concrete construction supporting large-scale commercial and structural concrete projects.

The Safety Intern will work alongside experienced safety and operations professionals and gain exposure to both field and administrative aspects of construction safety.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

The Safety Intern will assist the HS&E team with a variety of safety-related activities, including:

• Assist with field safety inspections, observations, and audits on active construction projects.

• Support the preparation and maintenance of weekly, monthly, and quarterly safety reports.

• Assist with collecting, organizing, and analyzing safety data to identify trends and opportunities for continuous improvement.

• Support the development and maintenance of project-specific safety plans, emergency action plans, and other safety documentation.

• Assist with safety orientations, toolbox talks, training programs, and employee safety communications.

• Help coordinate safety training schedules, registrations, certifications, and training records.

• Assist with maintaining Safety Department files, records, and documentation.

• Support data entry and recordkeeping within Orion's Safety Management System, including Intelex.

• Assist with documentation associated with incidents, injuries, property damage, and environmental events.

• Participate in project and jobsite safety meetings as appropriate.

• Gain exposure to OSHA requirements and construction safety regulations applicable to marine, heavy civil, and concrete construction.

• Work alongside Safety, Operations, Project Management, and field personnel to promote Orion's safety culture.

• Perform other safety-related projects and assignments as requested.

• Maintain confidentiality regarding Company information, records, and business practices.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

• Currently pursuing or recently completed an Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Industrial Safety, Environmental Health & Safety, Construction Management, Engineering, or a related discipline.

• Interest in pursuing a career in construction safety, occupational safety, or environmental health and safety.

• Previous construction or safety experience is helpful but not required.

• Basic understanding of OSHA or construction safety principles is preferred.

• Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.

• Ability and willingness to work in both office and active construction environments.

• Comfortable working with Microsoft Office and learning safety management and reporting systems.

• Ability to interact professionally with field employees, project teams, supervisors, and management.

• Willingness to learn, ask questions, and actively participate in field safety activities.

• Valid driver's license may be required depending on assignment and project location.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The Safety Intern must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable workplace accommodation.

The position may require visits to active construction sites and the ability to properly wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including hard hat, safety glasses, hearing protection, high-visibility clothing, steel-toed footwear, and other PPE required by the work environment.

The intern should be comfortable working in both office and outdoor construction environments and walking active project sites.
