Job Summary
As part of our Engineering Services Department the Structural Engineer supports the development, optimization, and troubleshooting of structural systems across oil and gas, chemical, and related industrial facilities. This role is responsible for structural analysis and design, member and foundation sizing, preparation of engineering drawings and calculations, and support of construction and field activities. The Structural Engineer works closely with multidisciplinary teams from early concept development through detailed engineering and implementation.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and update structural design deliverables, including engineering calculations, design reports, specifications, and construction drawings for steel, concrete, and other structural systems.
  • Perform structural analysis and design of buildings, pipe racks, equipment supports, platforms, access structures, towers, and foundations using appropriate software and engineering methods.
  • Size and specify structural members, connections, and foundations in accordance with applicable codes, standards, and project requirements.
  • Evaluate loads and load combinations (dead, live, wind, seismic, thermal, piping, equipment, erection, and operational loads) and apply them consistently in structural designs.
  • Review and interpret geotechnical reports and incorporate recommendations into foundation and structural design.
  • Prepare and review structural drawings and details, working closely with designers and CAD personnel to ensure accuracy, clarity, and constructability.
  • Support brownfield and existing-facility work, including field walkdowns, evaluation of existing structures, and design of retrofits and modifications.
  • Participate in design reviews, constructability reviews, and safety-related evaluations of structural designs, and incorporate recommendations into engineering deliverables.
  • Prepare and review technical documentation, including design basis documents, calculations, specifications, and engineering memoranda.
  • Coordinate closely with civil, geotechnical, mechanical, piping, electrical, instrumentation, and project management teams to ensure structural designs align with overall project objectives and constraints.
  • Review and comment on vendor and fabricator drawings, equipment support requirements, and package designs to confirm consistency with structural design and project specifications.
  • Provide technical support during construction, including review of shop drawings, response to RFIs, participation in site visits, and resolution of field engineering issues.
  • Contribute structural input to project planning activities, including scope definition, estimating, and schedule development.
  • Communicate clearly with internal stakeholders and clients, presenting technical findings and recommendations in a concise, actionable manner.
  • Mentor junior engineers or designers and, at senior/lead levels, take responsibility for leading structural work packages and coordinating with project management.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to support project and departmental objectives.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering with an emphasis in Structural Engineering, or a Bachelor’s/Master’s degree in Structural Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
  • Approximately 5 to 20 years of progressive structural engineering experience in industrial facilities such as oil and gas, petrochemical, chemical, power, and related heavy industrial or manufacturing environments.
  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) license in a U.S. state is required; ability to obtain reciprocity in Alabama within a reasonable timeframe if not already licensed there.
  • Structural Engineer (SE) license is highly favorable/preferred, particularly for candidates considered at Senior or Lead Structural Engineer levels.
  • Strong background in analysis and design of structural steel and reinforced concrete systems for industrial facilities, including pipe racks, equipment supports, platforms, access structures, buildings, and foundations.
  • Proficiency with structural analysis and design software (for example, STAAD.Pro, RISA, SAP2000, ETABS, RAM, or similar tools), along with standard engineering calculation tools such as Mathcad.
  • In-depth knowledge of applicable codes and standards, including AISC, ACI, ASCE 7, IBC, and relevant client and site standards.
  • Experience preparing and reviewing structural calculations, design reports, specifications, and construction drawing packages, with attention to constructability and field conditions.
  • Experience interpreting geotechnical reports and incorporating recommendations into foundation and structural design.
  • Experience with brownfield and existing-facility work, including field walkdowns, evaluation of existing structures, retrofit design, and structural modifications, is preferred.
  • Experience supporting construction, including review of shop drawings, responding to RFIs, and providing field engineering support during erection and installation, is strongly preferred.
  • Proven ability to coordinate effectively with civil, geotechnical, mechanical, piping, electrical, instrumentation, and project management disciplines in a multi-discipline EPC environment.
  • Demonstrated experience leading work packages, mentoring junior engineers or designers, and interfacing with clients, consistent with Engineer, Senior Engineer, and Lead Structural Engineer levels.
  • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple assignments.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, with sound engineering judgment.
  • Proficiency with MS Office tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, SharePoint).
  • Valid driver’s license and suitable driving record that meets company driver requirements, with the ability to obtain a TWIC card if required.
  • Ability to work effectively in a multi-discipline, fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to read and understand policies, procedures, and processes, and apply them consistently.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Organized, goal-driven, and self-motivated, with a commitment to high quality.
  • Consistent record of excellent attendance and work performance.
  • Ability to pass an approved background check.
  • Ability to pass a drug and alcohol test and participate in random drug testing as required.
