Full-Time Certified Medical Assistant
Schedule: 4, 10-hour shifts per week. Day off rotates every 3 months.
Job Summary:
We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Medical Assistant to join our general and vascular surgery office. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in supporting our surgeons and healthcare team in delivering high-quality patient care in an office-based setting. This role includes phone triage responsibilities to ensure efficient and effective patient communication and care coordination.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist in preparing patients for consultations and minor office-based procedures, including taking vital signs, verifying patient information, and ensuring informed consent.
- Perform phone triage by assessing patient needs, answering questions, and providing information or directing calls to the appropriate healthcare professional.
- Maintain examination rooms by ensuring they are clean, well-stocked, and equipped with necessary supplies and instruments.
- Assist surgeons during minor office procedures by preparing instruments, providing patient support, and ensuring a sterile environment.
- Collect and manage specimens for laboratory analysis, ensuring proper labeling and documentation.
- Assist with insurance referrals, OMPRO’s, waivers, FMLA and other documentation requirements.
- Assist with cleaning instruments and the autoclaving process.
- Monitor and document patient vital signs and communicate any concerns to the healthcare team.
- Provide patient education regarding surgical procedures, post-operative care, and follow-up appointments.
- Schedule and coordinate patient follow-up visits.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation of all patient interactions and procedures in electronic health records.
- Ensure compliance with all office policies, procedures, and safety standards.
- Collaborate with surgeons, physician assistants, nurses, and administrative staff to ensure seamless patient care and efficient office operations.
- Participate in ongoing education and training to stay current with best practices in medical assistance.
Qualifications:
- Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program required; certification as a Medical Assistant is preferred.
- Previous experience in a surgical or clinical office setting is highly desirable.
- Strong knowledge of medical terminology, surgical instruments, and aseptic techniques.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively manage phone triage.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced office environment.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Commitment to patient safety and confidentiality.
Education/Experience Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant program required.
- At least 1-2 years of experience as a Medical Assistant, preferably in a surgical or clinical office setting is highly desirable.
- Associate or Bachelor's Degree preferred.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- General understanding of medical terminology and procedures related to general and vascular surgery.
- Bilingual in English and Spanish, preferred (and compensated).
- Proficiency in using electronic health records (EHR) systems for documentation and scheduling. Experience with Epic EHR, preferred.
- Ability to perform clinical tasks such as taking vital signs, preparing patients, and assisting with procedures.
- Skill in venipuncture and specimen collection.
- Strong organizational skills to manage multiple tasks and priorities effectively.
- Ability to communicate clearly and compassionately with patients, families, and healthcare team members.
- Problem-solving skills to address patient concerns and administrative challenges.
- Ability to maintain a calm demeanor in stressful situations and provide reassurance to patients.
- Understanding of HIPAA regulations and commitment to maintaining patient confidentiality.
- Understanding of exposure control for bloodborne and airborne pathogens.
Certificates, Licenses, & Registrations:
- Certification as a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) is preferred.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required.
- Additional certifications relevant to surgical assistance or patient care are a plus.
Physical Demands:
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods during the workday.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds, including medical supplies and equipment.
- Frequent bending, stooping, and reaching to assist patients and manage supplies.
- Manual dexterity required to operate medical equipment and perform clinical tasks.
- Ability to assist in moving patients as needed for examinations or procedures.
- Visual and auditory ability to observe and communicate with patients and staff.
