Position Overview

The Behavior Support Specialist provides consultation, assessment, and intervention services for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) who may present with challenging behaviors. This role emphasizes positive behavior support (PBS), person-centered planning, and collaboration with families, caregivers, and interdisciplinary teams to promote safety, independence, and quality of life.

Reports to: Lead Behavior Support Specialist/Associate Director

Essential Job Functions:

Conduct functional behavior assessments (FBA) and develop individualized positive behavior support plans (PBSP), and associated documents in compliance of the Oregon Administrative Rule (OAR).

Assist/conduct the annual maintenance of behavioral documents (FBA, PBSP, and BDT).

Implement and monitor evidence-based interventions that focus on reducing challenging behavior(s) and work towards building adaptive skills.

Provide training and coaching to staff, families, and caregivers on positive behavior support strategies.

Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams (case managers, therapists, medical providers) to ensure integrated care.

Participate and collaborate with ISP teams and designated person(s) regarding ongoing behavioral needs.

Document services, progress, and outcomes in compliance with Oregon DHS and Medicaid requirements.

Ensure interventions prioritize least intrusive strategies to protect health and safety.

Provide oversight of all restraint application(s) as necessary; remaining up to date and familiar with applicable regulations (review incident reports (GER’s) and behavior data tracking (BDT); review all incidents regarding Safeguarding Intervention/Restraint applications to ensure application oversight).

Maintain professional standards and adhere to Oregon Administrative Rules (OAR 411-304-0170).

Conduct Oregon Intervention Systems (OIS) to agency employees (candidate will have/work towards OIS instructor certification).

Participate as part of the “Program Support Team” in monthly meeting(s) to discuss agency-wide and individual updates, progress reports, problems and concerns regarding persons supported and programs.

Comply with all other conditions of employment as stated in the OSLP policy and procedures manual.

Qualifications:

Physical Requirements

Occasionally = up to 1/3 shift

Frequently = up to 2/3 shift

Continuously = throughout shift

Standing: Continuously in combination with walking indoors and outdoors.

Sitting: Occasionally

Walking: Continuously in combination with standing.

Worker Mobility: Can change positions frequently throughout work shift.

Carry/Lift: Occasionally and independently lift and carry up to 45 pounds.

Pushing/Pulling: Frequently and independently push/pull people served during dressing, transferring or positioning. Frequently and independently push/pull wheelchairs or lifting equipment and occasionally while performing routine household and/or yard tasks.

Bending/Squatting: Frequently throughout the work shift while attending to people served and cleaning.

Reaching/Handling: Use of fingers/hands/arms continuously. Occasional overhead reaching needed.

Grasping/Squeezing: Frequently throughout work shift.

Twisting: Frequently throughout work shift.

Climbing: Occasionally ascend or descend stairs or ramps indoors or outdoors.

Crawling: 0% of the time.

Social Skill Requirements

Ability to positively interact with residents and coworkers.

Ability to effectively send and receive verbal communication using the English language.

Ability to direct and coordinate the work of person served (in CIE program).

Aptitude Requirements

Proven abilities in: behavior support planning; developing and implementing behavioral documentation systems in compliance with OARs; application of OARs to specific situations; and an understanding of the ISP process. 

OIS Trainer Certification, or the ability to become certified.

Must be able to learn and retain new skills.

Minimum two years college level coursework.

Three years’ experience working with developmentally disabled adults or a closely related social service or mental health field.

Demonstrated skill in community relations

Above average in verbal and written communications.  Must be able to read English and write it legibly.  Able to perform basic math functions. Must have the ability to analyze, reason, and make decisions.

Experience collaborating with management level teams

Demonstrated experience in supervisor/personnel management, including progressive discipline; coaching; and team building.

Ability to meet the general employment qualifications of OSLP.

Environmental Factors

Most work is performed in residential house or office.  If person served is working within the CIE program, some work may be in the community as a social or employment experience.

Occasional exposure to outside elements.

Occasional driving of wheelchair van, minivan, or sedan.

Possible exposure to chemicals and/or compounds throughout work shift.

This position summary covers most of the duties performed; however, other duties and responsibilities not listed may be assigned at the discretion of management.

Salary : $58,240
