The Oregon State Hospital, in Salem, Oregon is seeking to hire an Associate Director of Patient Education. This position exists within the Vocational, Educational, Spiritual Care, Peer Recovery and Native Services Department (VESPN), which provides a comprehensive range of educational, vocational, spiritual and peer support services to the forensic inpatient and residential population of Oregon State Hospital. The Associate Director of Patient Education oversees the provision of direct patient services of the Supported Education program, Supported Employment program, Service Dog Training program and Hairdresser Services.
What will you do!
The Associate Director of Patient Education is responsible for assisting the Director in planning, implementing and evaluating services provided by the department; directing and assuring that educational and vocational training needs of the patient are identified and therapeutically addressed; assuring educational and vocational services are effectively and efficiently delivered in a cost-effective manner and ensuring that the program's operational practices comply with state and federal laws, regulations and accreditation agency's guidelines. This position provides leadership for a complex clinical program that provides psychiatric treatment services to Oregon State Hospital patients. In this supervisory role, oversight will be performed primarily on site.
Supervises, develops, and maintains an effective Supported Education program, Vocational Training program and Hairdresser Services for OSH patients/residents:
- Provides educational and vocational training for hospital patients in response to patient population needs.
- Supervises, hires, trains, monitors performance, develops, coaches, and provides direction to employees.
- Provides management support to assure suitable educational/training plans specific to patient’s needs, beginning with the intake orientation process through transition to the community.
- Assures an environment which provides therapeutic support, encouragement, growth, safety, and security for hospital patients/residents.
- Plans, implements, and evaluates program services; measures effectiveness; identifies and resolves problems; adjusts program and procedures to meet needed changes.
- In collaboration with the Director, plans and develops long-range goals and short-range objectives which are consistent with agency/facility direction; and the needs of patients/residents.
- Collaborates with other program staff to assure alignment of services.
- Reviews operational needs in terms of workspace, materials, services, equipment, and staffing; initiates appropriate action with justification.
- Keeps work office and education/training areas open, appropriately staffed and in a professional, business-oriented environment.
- Supervises assigned personnel and effectively develops and uses available staff.
- Provides department safety training and assists staff in all areas with issues related to safety.
- Ensures fidelity and continuous improvement of programs and aligns services with the needs of the patient population.

Minimum qualifications
- Four years of lead work, supervision, or progressively related experience to the class concept; OR one year of related experience and a bachelor's degree in a related field.
- Experience implementing administrative and educational principles and practices of adult education and/or workforce development.
- Must possess a current valid Oregon Driver's License and maintain an acceptable driving record.
Additional preferred skills
- Quality communication skills in dealing with internal (patients and staff) and external (agencies and business) contacts, and the ability to demonstrate initiative and independent judgement on an on-going basis.
- Team player and team building skills- including the willingness to collaborate, share information, and contribute to the team's success.
- Knowledge of principles of mental health treatment, continuous quality improvement and human resources management.
