The Role

As the Assistant Resident Engineer, you will support the Resident Engineer by overseeing project teams and helping ensure contractors meet all highway construction contract requirements. You’ll provide day-to-day leadership, guidance, and mentorship to a crew of 15–20 employees while contributing to preliminary engineering work and other assigned project tasks. Apply today!

A Day In The Life

  • Proactively anticipate, identify, and resolve project construction issues.
  • Review plans and specifications and recommend changes as needed.
  • Initiate, prepare, and justify contract change orders, including cost estimates.
  • Review and analyze contractor claims and time extension requests.
  • Elevate unresolved issues to the Resident Engineer in a timely manner.
  • Provide oversight to ensure contractor and subcontractor compliance with contract requirements.
  • Assist the resident engineer in supervising field construction contracts, including highways, bridges, interchanges, traffic signals, bikeways, and buildings.
  • Review contract work for compliance with plans and specifications; accept or reject work based on established standards.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with contractors, the public, and project stakeholders.
  • Communicate daily with the resident engineer, contractor, inspectors, surveyors, designers, and
  • support staff.
  • Work in an office environment with hybrid work options available.

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a Civil Engineering (CE) license in the State of Oregon OR the ability to obtain license within six months of hire.

If registered in another state, successful applicants will be required to obtain a temporary permit to practice engineering, pursuant to ORS 672.109, within six months from date of hire.

Special Qualifications

Driving is an essential function of this position. You must have a valid US driver license and an acceptable driving record. We will conduct pre-employment driving records checks on our final candidate(s). Your license does not have to be issued in Oregon to be considered.

  • Experience in construction inspection and contract administration - Highway preferred.
  • Experience interpreting construction plans and specifications.
  • Experience applying knowledge of mathematics, survey principals, engineering and construction practices and procedures.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a team.
