The Oregon Department of Corrections is seeking a dedicated Facility Maintenance Specialist to join our team at Columbia River Correctional Institution.
About The Job – Your Role
In this role you will be responsible for coordinating, instructing, and training Adults in Custody (AICs) in the operation, maintenance, and repair of facility systems, equipment, and building structures within a correctional environment.
You will perform journey-level maintenance and repair work across multiple trades while leading AIC work crews in both skilled and semi-skilled tasks. Work includes maintaining physical plant systems, troubleshooting equipment issues, and ensuring buildings and infrastructure remain safe, functional, and compliant with established standards.
As the Facility Maintenance Specialist you will provide hands-on instruction, assign and monitor work, and ensure tasks are completed efficiently and safely.
This position requires strong technical knowledge across building systems and the ability to communicate expectations clearly while maintaining accountability in a structured environment.
You will play a key part in supporting facility operations while also contributing to skill development for AIC workers through practical, supervised work experience.
This position is represented by American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME). This position may be eligible for Police & Fire (P&F) benefits through Public Employees Retirement System (PERS), as defined by statute.
Minimum Qualifications
Two (2) years of: a) general building maintenance; b) carpentry; c) electrical; d) mechanical; e) painting; or f) HVAC experience.
A journeyman's license/card in any of the above trades will substitute for this experience.

Requested Skills
Work is performed in a prison that houses minimum security AICs. The AICs have the potential for becoming angry, hostile, abusive, and aggressive presenting the risk of employees being physically injured, death or being taken hostage. There is an inherent responsibility to provide assistance through recall and or reassignment during AIC unrest and other emergency situations occurring at the institution.
The work locations vary; there will be multiple floors that require the use of stairs some work locations will require walking long distances. Workers may work in inclement weather conditions that can include rain, wind, ice, snow, and standing water. Some work will involve walking or working on uneven ground, working around storm drains that could potentially have contaminants.
Work may include frequent lifting and moving heavy objects short distances. At times the employee may work alone or supervising large groups of AICs depending on operational needs.
The use of hand tools manual and electric will be daily as needed, the use of ladders, scaffolding, lifts, and other platforms may be required.
Workers will be supplied with PPE equipment appropriate to the job, safety concerns will be addressed with a job hazard analysis to identify needs.
