Job Title: Overnight Dorm Staff – Temporary

Department: OCB Vocational Rehab

Location: Downtown Portland

Reports To: Dorm Manager & Assistant Dorm Manager

Job Type: In-Person (Seasonal, June-August)

Salary: $30/hr ($29 Base $1 Overnight Differential)

Shifts: Full Time Overnight; Varying schedule including weekends 11pm-8am

The Organization

Oregon's Commission for the Blind (OCB) provides services to Oregonians who experience vision loss and need specialized training and support to live full and productive lives. OCB’s Emerging Leaders Summer Work Experience Program (EL-SWEP) is a 6-week residential program for youth ages 16-20 designed to build work experience and independent living skills. EL-SWEP students engage in activities and classes designed to activate and enhance each individual’s sense of self-worth and self-reliance. We help students build confidence, continue their education, and be a fully connected part of their communities. Residential dorm staff work hands-on with youth at EL-SWEP to develop the skills they will need to live independently in the future. As dorm staff with EL-SWEP, you will get the chance to make a meaningful change in the lives of young adults.

Job Description

Dorm Staff will support students with disabilities in their dorms, in activities of daily living, and in recreational activities. This position will work under the supervision of the EL-SWEP Leadership Team and will be directed to work with specific students at El-SWEP as needed. This is an OVERNIGHT position-- well-suited for college students, artists, or other night owls!

Job Duties:

  • Create and maintain a safe and positive environment for students
  • Monitor and guide students through daily schedules and routines
  • Supervise and interact with students during scheduled recreational activities in the dorm and in the community
  • Help students develop positive social, professional, and life skills
  • Mentor students in gaining valuable insight into their own future careers, educational options, and life goals
  • Observe and assist students as needed with daily living skills including:
  • Maintaining clean personal & shared spaces
  • Personal hygiene
  • Menu planning & meal prep
  • Shopping
  • Laundry
  • Financial literacy
  • Monitor and evaluate student performance by collecting skill acquisition and production data and obtaining feedback from student, employer, and community members, providing additional training or intervention as needed
  • Provide on-going assessment and follow-along services as needed and authorized
  • Provide Independent Living Skills & Life Skills Training to students in community based and individual settings
  • Document and maintain weekly records of students’ goals and progress including detailed report writing
  • Manage time effectively and have availability to work various hours of the day and night
  • Complete paperwork in a timely manner
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience working with youth and/or populations with disabilities preferred
  • Possess computer skills, including MS Office, emails, and basic data entry
  • Communicate effectively with students and staff verbally and in written form
  • Possess basic cooking and cleaning skills
  • Have patience and flexibility to adjust instructional approach as needed based on students’ skill level
  • Maintain professionality with company tech
  • Remain composed in rapidly changing situations
  • Be able to maintain confidentiality in performing assigned tasks
  • Work harmoniously with staff, students, and community members

Job Types: Full-time, Temporary

Pay: $30.00 per hour
