What are the responsibilities and job description for the Horizontal Directional Drill Operator position at Oregon Brothers Construction?
We are seeking a skilled Horizontal Directional Drill (HDD) Operator to join our team. This role involves the setup, operation, and maintenance of directional drilling equipment to install fiber optic and other utility conduits with minimal surface disruption.
Duties
Equipment Operation:
- Safely operate horizontal directional drilling rigs and locating systems
- Perform bore planning, setup, and pilot bore operations in accordance with job specifications and blueprints.
- Read utility locates, plans, and job maps to guide bore paths and avoid underground conflicts.
Drilling and Utility Installation
- Monitor bore progress and drill fluid returns to ensure safe and accurate boring.
- Pull back conduit, pipe, or cable in proper alignment and tension.
- Mix and manage drilling fluids; ensure adequate lubrication and borehole stabilization.
Site Preparation and Safety
- Assist with job site preparation, including potholing and verifying existing utilities.
- Maintain a safe work environment and comply with all OSHA, local, and company safety protocols.
- Ensure equipment is operated and maintained according to manufacturer specifications and best practices.
Teamwork and Communication
- Collaborate with ground crew, locators, and supervisors to coordinate project execution.
- Maintain detailed and accurate daily job logs and project documentation.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- Minimum of 5 years experience operating HDD equipment in underground utility installation.
- Working knowledge of underground construction practices and equipment maintenance.
- CDL Class A license with clean driving record.
- Ability to lift up to 75 lbs, work in various weather conditions, and perform physical tasks as needed.
