POSITION SUMMARY

The Robotics Coach leads and manages the high school Robotics team, guiding students through the design, construction, programming, and testing of competition robots. This role supports student learning in engineering design, coding, problem-solving, and collaboration while preparing teams for regional and state competitions. This position offers the opportunity to inspire innovation, support hands-on STEM learning, and prepare students for competitive robotics events while building technical and leadership skills as an extension of the mission and ministry of Orange Lutheran.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Team Leadership & Instruction

  • Facilitate a weekly Monday evening workshop/meeting, 6:00-9:00 pm, focused on robot design, building, programming, and testing
  • Teach core robotics concepts, including mechanical design, sensors, programming logic, and troubleshooting
  • Guide students through the engineering design process from concept to competition-ready robot
  • Foster teamwork, time management, and effective communication skills

Competition Preparation

  • Register and prepare teams for a minimum of two Robotics competitions each year
  • Ensure compliance with current season rules and competition standards
  • Organize practice sessions, scrimmages, and performance reviews
  • Support students in developing engineering notebooks and presentations as required
  • Coordinate additional practice times/days to prepare for competitions

Program Management

  • Maintain inventory of robotics equipment, tools, and materials
  • Ensure safe use of tools and adherence to safety procedures
  • Coordinate with school administration regarding scheduling, transportation, and event logistics
  • Partner with school leadership to apply for grant funding for the Robotics program
  • Provide regular updates to the Academies Department Chair regarding student or program needs and program status
  • Communicate regularly with students and families about expectations, schedules, and competition updates
  • Work with MarComms & Admissions for internal and external marketing and program promotion

Student Development

  • Create an inclusive environment that encourages participation from diverse learners
  • Support students in developing leadership roles within the team
  • Promote perseverance, innovation, and ethical conduct in competitive settings

Education

Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science Degree

Experience

Equivalent directly-related job experience

LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, AND CLEARANCES

  • Valid Fingerprint/Background Check Clearance
  • Valid CPR and First Aid certifications
  • TB Risk Assessment
  • Ministry Safe Clearance

KEY COMPETENCIES

Required

  • Knowledge of mechanical systems and basic programming (e.g., C , Python, or VEXcode)
  • Experience working with high school students in an instructional or coaching capacity
  • Ability to commit to weekly Monday evening sessions, weekend competitions, and other preparation time as needed

Preferred

  • Background in engineering, computer science, STEM education, or a related field
  • Experience with VEX Robotics or comparable robotics platforms
  • Prior competitive robotics coaching experience

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to stand for extended periods
  • Ability to lift and move robotics kits and equipment (up to 25 lbs)

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • The typical working environment is split between a climate-controlled classroom/office environment and periods of work outdoors during events, with exposure to varying temperatures and climatic conditions
  • The typical noise level is quiet to moderate, but may occasionally be loud at program events/activities
