About the Employer

The Orange County Department of Education (OCDE) serves some of Orange County’s most vulnerable student populations and provides support and mandated fiscal oversight to 28 school districts serving more than 600 schools and approximately 475,000 students. In addition to providing direct instruction to students through its own alternative and special education programs, OCDE administers an array of programs and services that are critical to the operations of local school districts and community colleges, facilitating professional development, legal guidance, payroll, career and technical education support, high-speed internet access, Local Control and Accountability Plan assistance and approval, resources for families, and student enrichment. Job Summary

The Orange County Department of Education (OCDE) is seeking an Educational Interpreter for the Deaf to provide American Sign Language interpretation and transliteration services for deaf and hard-of-hearing students in classroom, school, and extracurricular settings. OCDE's Connections Program provides individualized, standards-based education for students with diverse support needs, including students with significant disabilities, emotional disturbance disabilities, and those who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing. Serving students across 13 school sites in Orange County, Connections offers low student-to-staff ratios, structured learning environments, and personalized instruction that promotes academic, social-emotional, and behavioral growth. Students also benefit from career technical education, community-based instruction, and vocational training designed to support lifelong success.

Requirements / Qualifications

Education and Experience: Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be one (1) year of experience working with deaf and hard of hearing children in an organized setting and one of the following; or an equivalent combination of training and experience: • One year of responsible interpretation experience, preferably within an educational setting. • Graduation from a two-year college with major coursework in interpreter training, education, and sign language or a closely related field. Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements: • Possession of an appropriate valid certification issued by the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf or equivalent certification, Level 4, on any of the following nationally recognized sign language assessments: NIC (National Interpreter Certification), EIPA (Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment), ESSE (Educational Sign Skills Evaluation
