Telecom Engineer III – Optical Transport Engineer (Hybrid – Raleigh, NC)
Optomi, in partnership with a leading energy and utilities organization, is seeking a Telecom Engineer III – Optical Transport Engineer to support large-scale carrier transport and telecom backhaul initiatives across the Carolinas region. This role is heavily focused on optical transport engineering, carrier network implementation, and telecom infrastructure delivery within a mission-critical utility environment. The ideal candidate brings strong hands-on experience with Ciena optical transport technologies, carrier transport design, and network deployment support, while thriving in a collaborative Agile environment.

What type of experience the right candidate has:
- 5 years of experience in telecom engineering, carrier transport engineering, or optical transport engineering
- Strong hands-on experience with Ciena optical transport equipment, especially Ciena 39xx and 6500 platforms
- Experience supporting telecom backhaul and carrier transport network implementations
- Strong understanding of optical ring design, fiber path analysis, and optical budgets
- Experience with carrier network deployment, configuration, implementation, and support
- Knowledge of microwave, cellular, and third-party carrier circuit technologies
- Experience working with Cisco networking equipment and telecom infrastructure devices
- Familiarity with Agile methodologies, Kanban, Jira, and ServiceNow environments
- Strong documentation, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills
- Ability to operate independently and exercise strong technical judgment in complex environments
What the responsibilities are of the right candidate:
- Design and support carrier transport and telecom backhaul network solution
- Review fiber availability, optical budgets, and existing network connectivity requirements
- Develop high-level optical ring designs leveraging existing and new transport infrastructure
- Create and maintain Ciena 39xx configurations and support Ciena 6500 eMOTR integrations
- Support implementation, cutovers, migrations, and turn-up activities for new transport rings
- Develop installation plans, methods of procedure, and construction documentation packages
- Coordinate equipment, materials, rack space, and DC power requirements for deployments
- Partner with cross-functional engineering teams to support multi-discipline telecom environments
- Support software upgrades, backup tasks, and operational readiness activities
- Maintain accurate engineering records, documentation, and project deliverables
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and emerging telecom technology adoption
- Provide remote support to field services teams during implementation and activation activities
