Overview
Optometric Physicians of Middle Tennessee (OPMT) is seeking a dependable, motivated Optician / Assistant Lab Technician to join our optical team.
This position combines patient-facing optical responsibilities with hands-on support in our in-office optical lab. The ideal candidate is someone who enjoys working with patients but is also detail-oriented, organized, and comfortable learning the technical side of eyewear production.
While previous optical or lab experience is a plus, we are willing to train the right candidate who demonstrates a strong work ethic, reliability, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn.
Responsibilities
Optical / Patient Care
- Assist patients with selecting frames based on fit, style, prescription needs, and lifestyle
- Educate patients on lens materials, treatments, and available eyewear options
- Accurately interpret eyeglass prescriptions and take necessary optical measurements
- Adjust, repair, dispense, and troubleshoot eyewear
- Provide friendly, professional, and knowledgeable patient service
- Accurately enter and process eyewear orders
- Verify completed eyewear for accuracy and quality before dispensing
- Follow established optical procedures and company policies
In-Office Lab Support
- Assist with the production and processing of eyeglass orders in our in-office finishing lab
- Learn to operate optical equipment used to edge and finish prescription lenses
- Inspect lenses and completed eyewear for quality and prescription accuracy
- Organize and prioritize incoming lab orders to support timely turnaround
- Maintain accurate tracking of jobs throughout the lab process
- Keep the lab and equipment clean, organized, and properly maintained
- Communicate with opticians and office locations regarding order status, missing information, frames, lenses, or other issues that could delay completion
- Help ensure eyewear is completed accurately and efficiently while meeting our quality standards
Qualifications
- Optical experience is preferred but not required for the right candidate
- Previous optician, optical lab, healthcare, retail, or customer service experience is a plus
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow established procedures
- Dependable and able to manage responsibilities with minimal supervision
- Comfortable learning new equipment, systems, and technical processes
- Strong organizational and time-management skills
- Basic math and measurement skills
- Ability to communicate professionally with patients and team members
- Ability to work efficiently while maintaining accuracy
- Willingness to assist in both patient-facing optical duties and laboratory responsibilities
- Ability to adapt to changing priorities and help where needed
