Job Overview
OptoFidelity is seeking a motivated, hands-on Field Optical Engineer to join our internal team in Cupertino, CA, supporting AR/VR/MR component- and system-level testers. This role is ideal for early-career professionals—recent Master’s or Ph.D. graduates—or candidates with 2–4 years of relevant experience. You’ll gain broad exposure to cutting-edge optical systems, work in a start-up environment with autonomy, and have significant room to grow. You will travel to client sites to maintain, optimize, and provide feedback on our AR/VR/MR test systems. This role offers a unique opportunity to directly influence OptoFidelity's next-generation AR/VR/MR testing solutions while advancing your career in optical engineering. As the team grows, this position is expected to evolve into an Optical Design Engineer role, contributing to the architecture and development of future AR/VR/MR test systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of AR/VR/MR optical testers at client locations
- Provide guidance to clients on best practices and usage of OptoFidelity test systems
- Collect, analyze, and document test data; communicate findings to internal and client teams
- Collaborate with internal design and engineering teams in Finland to improve systems based on field insights
- Support development of automated optical measurement systems and component-level testers
- Participate in an initial training program in Finland with senior optical engineers
- Engage in hands-on optical alignment and lab work, contributing to prototype-to-production testing and system validation
- Design optical lenses and components using tools such as Zemax, Code V, or LightTools
Must-Have Qualifications
- BS, MS, or Ph.D. in Optical Engineering, Optics, Materials Science, or a closely related field
- Strong Python programming skills
- Hands-on experience in optics or optical characterization through internships, personal projects, or professional experience
- Comfortable aligning optics in the lab and working with complex optical hardware — not just simulations
- Excellent documentation and communication skills
- Willingness to travel 25–50% of the time to US client locations
- Experience with optical lens design using Zemax, Code V, or LightTools
Nice-to-Have Qualifications
- Experience with SolidWorks or other mechanical design tools.
- Optical design/simulation tools experience
- Familiarity with Linux
- Knowledge of AR/VR industry, waveguides, or color science
- Background in image quality evaluation or metrology instruments
- Exposure to prototype-to-production transitions, system bring-up, or hardware validation
