Position Summary

The Animal Care Specialist plays a vital role in maintaining the health and well-being of all animals residing on a privately owned hobby farm in the Sarasota, FL area.

This position requires the delivery of attentive, compassionate, and consistent care, which is essential to the success of the animal care program. Key responsibilities include daily feeding, cleaning, health monitoring, and the humane handling of animals. The role demands flexibility, as many duties are performed outdoors in varying weather conditions. To excel in this position, it is important to have a deep respect for animals, a strong work ethic, and the ability to work effectively as part of a team.

This role will report directly to the Barn Operations Manager and work alongside other employees such as animal care specialists and groundskeepers.

Daily Animal Care

· Provide food and water for all animals, following specific dietary requirements and established feeding schedules. These schedules may change as animals mature.

· Closely monitor animals for any signs of illness, injury, or abnormal behavior. Promptly report any concerns to the veterinarian and owners to ensure timely intervention and minimize stress for the animals.

· Administer medications and supplements as directed by the veterinarian, maintaining careful oversight throughout the medication cycle.

· Clean, disinfect, and maintain all animal living spaces, including stalls, pens, coops, and pastures. Adjust cleaning schedules based on usage and seasonal needs.

· Ensure all animals have access to comfortable bedding and shelter, with arrangements tailored to their location, such as barn or paddock areas.

· Coordinate scheduling for groomers and farriers as necessary for individual animals, ensuring that coats and hooves are maintained within comfortable limits for each species.

Animal Handling and Health

· Handle animals safely and humanely, using species-appropriate techniques and a broad understanding of different animal species.

· Organize and prepare animals for veterinary visits.

· Safely restrain animals during medical treatments or routine examinations.

· Oversee and assist with breeding, birthing, or reproductive duties when required.

Farm and Property Maintenance

· Maintain a clean and organized environment in the barn and surrounding animal areas.

· Monitor levels of feed, hay, and other supplies.

Required Skills and Qualifications

· Experience: Demonstrated experience in caring for farm animals, including horses, goats, poultry, and cattle or someone with previous experience as a vet tech or vet assistant. Involvement in organizations like 4H is appreciated as well.

· Knowledge: Strong understanding of animal behavior and welfare, with the ability to recognize signs of stress or illness.

· Observational Skills: Keen attention to detail to detect changes in animal health or behavior.

· Physical Fitness: The role is physically demanding and requires stamina, including lifting heavy items, bending, and kneeling.

· Work Ethic: Reliability, punctuality, and the ability to work independently as well as the ability to work within a team setting.

· Communication: Effective communication with farm owners regarding animal updates, supply needs, and emerging issues.

Preferred Qualifications

· Certification in animal care or animal first aid.

· Experience with advanced animal care procedures, such as wound dressing, administering injections, or assisting during birthing.

· Familiarity with local veterinarians who specialize in large or small specialty animals.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $22.00 - $25.00 per hour
