Medication Technician (Med Tech) – Job Description
Position Summary
The Medication Technician (Med Tech) is responsible for administering medications and treatments to residents in accordance with physician orders, state regulations, and company policy. This role supports resident health and safety by ensuring accurate medication delivery, proper documentation, and prompt communication of changes in condition.
The Med Tech also provides direct resident care and works collaboratively with caregivers and leadership to maintain quality standards.
Essential Responsibilities
Medication Administration
Administer medications and treatments as prescribed.
Follow the “Five Rights” of medication administration (right resident, medication, dose, time, route).
Accurately document medication administration in PCC (or applicable EMR system).
Monitor residents for medication side effects or adverse reactions.
Notify leadership and/or healthcare providers of concerns.
Reorder medications and coordinate with pharmacy as needed.
Maintain secure medication storage and narcotic count per policy.
Resident Care
Assist residents with activities of daily living (ADLs) as needed.
Respond to call lights promptly.
Monitor and report changes in resident condition.
Support fall prevention and safety initiatives.
Documentation & Compliance
Complete all required charting before end of shift.
Document incidents, refusals, and medication variances.
Ensure compliance with state assisted living regulations.
Maintain confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA guidelines.
Communication
Provide detailed shift report to incoming staff.
Communicate with families in a professional manner when appropriate.
Report urgent issues to the Shift Lead or Executive Director.
Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED required.
State-approved Medication Technician certification required.
Previous caregiving experience preferred.
Previous med tech experience.
Knowledge of medication administration procedures.
