This position serves as Regional Director, Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) enabling overall company strategy in driving continuous improvement with EHS and Sustainability best practices across the organization. This position supports the design/maintenance of organization-wide processes and tools that support Opta’s EHS management systems and ensures alignment with overall business strategy (e.g. Global EHS Standards, EHS Information Management System, E-learning platform, etc.). The Regional Director, EHS partners with management to analyze, design, improve and maintain EHS systems to support the timely, efficient, and accurate delivery of services and information to key stakeholders. The incumbent collaborates with senior leaders and site management to integrate systematic EHS and Sustainability practices into daily operations. Additionally, this position supports the process for incident investigations and corrective actions, resolution of regulatory matters, proactive remediation of unsafe conditions and supports mergers and acquisitions.
Essential Functions:
Work is typically performed in an office setting with regular visits to manufacturing facilities and locations. While visiting the manufacturing areas of the plant, use of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) is required at all times. The incumbent is regularly required to sit for extended periods of time, as well as talk and listen on the phone and in personal conversations or meetings. Domestic and international travel represents up to 50% of the work schedule including transportation by vehicle and by air. This position requires movement around office and manufacturing locations as well as the ability to drive a vehicle to/from the various locations including the occasional transportation of other team members. This position may require lifting, carrying, bending, kneeling, pivoting, reaching, standing, climbing stairs, handling, gripping, grasping and visually inspecting equipment. Overall, the physical effort level is considered light. Heavy equipment can be moved with a dolly or the aid of a hoist and is rare. Environment is fast paced and demanding most of the time. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms while working in the office with various files and forms and while working on the computer. Incumbent must utilize proper ergonomic safeguards such as monitor height and positions, keyboard location and height and proper wrists rests. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds in working with large files, binders, and computer equipment. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.

Essential Functions:
- This position reports into VP, Global EHS with direct reports in their assigned region
- Support development, maintenance, and continuous improvement efforts to facilitate EHS/Sustainability initiatives
- Partners with senior leaders and site representatives to ensure consistent deployment of standards, campaigns and initiatives across the organization
- Support due diligence activities ensuring expert safety guidance toward potential business ventures
- Support the development and maintenance of Global EHS Standards related to occupational safety, fire protection, environmental and sustainability compliance; examples include Accountability, Electrical Safety, Hazard Communication, Hot Work, Contractors, Fall Protection, Due Diligence, Site Closure, etc.
- Provide assistance with the implementation of ISO 14001 and 45001 Management Systems at applicable locations
- Support the implementation, update, and maintenance of Opta’s EHS Information Management System and LMS training platforms (where applicable); Integrates business strategy into automated and semi-automated processes
- Develops and maintains risk assessment tools to identify and minimize exposure to safety hazards
- Effective oral/written communication skills to clearly and concisely present information to key stakeholders
- Demonstrated ability to prioritize a large number of projects and track projects through completion
- Ability to effectively interact with others, establishing open, candid and trusting relationships
- Thorough knowledge of OSHA, EPA and Fire Prevention technologies (or similar region/country regulations)
- Recognize and be able to integrate Lean and Continuous Improvement (CI) concepts into EHS and vice-versa
- This role requires up to 50% travel (internationally/domestically), including overnight stays
- Serves as a liaison between Global EHS, Operations, Risk Management and Human Resources on applicable topics
- Develops and support implementation of emergency management and business continuity programs
- Leads the serious post incident review, communication of incidents that result or have the potential to result in serious injury; partners with regional and site leadership to identify root causes and preventive actions are effectively deployed across the organization
- Provides training/mentoring to regional/site representatives to strengthen EHS compliance and best practices
- Ensures the preparation of material evidence for hearings, lawsuits, and insurance investigations
- Formulates and implements actions on various EHS topics, as necessary, and shares updates with senior leadership
- Provide training on in-house compliance assurance program (CAP) and ensures implementation across the organization
- Ensure training programs are developed and implement to ensure regulatory compliance and incident best practices
- Stay current with EHS/property conservation regulations and standards

- Bachelor’s with 12 years relevant work experience in Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Fire Protection, Environmental Science, Engineering, Sustainability or related discipline or equivalent experience is preferred
- Minimum of 12 years of progressively increasing health and safety responsibility with an emphasis on implementation and maintenance of environmental, health and safety programs, fire prevention, sustainability and risk management
- Track record of making effective decisions, even when dealing with limited or ambiguous information
- Ability to lead and support corporate, division, business unit and site teams responsible for managing EHS risks
- Prior proven experience utilizing an enterprise-wide safety information system/database
- Previous experience with international locations and responsibilities or completed successful assignments
- Experience with OSHA Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP) or ISO 14001 and 45001 desired
- Prior experience implementing and/or maintaining an enterprise-wide database system
- Professional certifications preferred such as CSP, ASP, CHMM, CIH (or similar certification)
- Experience in a similar heavy manufacturing industry
