Job Title: Managing Attorney – Criminal Defense
Location: Remote (with required travel and in-person court appearances)
Reports To: [Executive Director / Owner]
Position Summary:
We are seeking an experienced and highly capable Managing Attorney to lead a portion of our criminal defense practice. This role is responsible for supervising a team of 10 attorneys across Florida -- working remotely, ensuring high-quality legal representation, maintaining consistent case strategy, and supporting professional development. While the position is primarily remote, regular travel and in-person court appearances are required.
Key Responsibilities:
- Supervise, mentor, and manage a team of potentially 10 criminal defense attorneys working in a remote environment
- Provide legal guidance, case strategy oversight, and quality control across all active cases
- Conduct regular case reviews to ensure effective representation and compliance with legal standards
- Support attorneys in complex litigation, including trial preparation and courtroom strategy
- Maintain consistent communication and accountability across a distributed team
- Develop and implement best practices, workflows, and performance standards
- Assist in hiring, onboarding, training, and performance evaluations of attorneys
- Manage caseload as needed, including handling serious or high-profile criminal matters
- Travel as required for court appearances, team meetings, and training sessions
- Ensure compliance with all applicable laws, ethical standards, and firm policies
Qualifications:
- Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school
- Active license to practice law in Florida (additional jurisdictions a plus)
- Minimum of 7–10 years of experience in criminal defense litigation
- Demonstrated leadership experience managing legal teams (preferably in a remote setting)
- Strong courtroom presence and trial experience
- Excellent organizational, communication, and decision-making skills
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and support a high-volume caseload
- Comfortable with remote management tools and virtual collaboration platforms
- Willingness and ability to travel regularly and appear in court as needed
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior experience as a managing attorney or practice group leader
- Experience supervising geographically dispersed teams
- Background in public defense, private criminal defense firms, or both
Work Environment:
- Primarily remote work environment - in person work required
- Frequent virtual meetings and in person meetings as well as communications
- Required travel for court appearances, team oversight, and occasional in-person meetings
Pay: $90,000.00 - $135,000.00 per year
