What are the responsibilities and job description for the Dye Range Operator position at Oppermann Webbing?
Summary: Operates machines to dye and add chemicals to webbing used in commercial and industrial applications.
First shift hours 6am to 2pm.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Weighs out quantities of powdered or liquid dyes and chemicals, following formula sheet.
- Pours dyes and chemicals into pail or mixing tank and turns valve to admit water into tank or pail up to mark on container wall.
- Stirs ingredients with paddle.
- Dumps contents of pail into supply tank or turns valves to transfer dye solution from mixing tank to supply tanks in dye range.
- Feeds loomstate webbing into machine using a portable sewing machine to sew strapping ends to maintain continuous flow of product.
- Turns valves to admit dye to dye pad from mixing tanks.
- Sets thermostats to control temperature in range ovens.
- Measures width of web at the beginning and end of the dying process using calipers to ensure all material is within specification.
- Starts machines, observe control panel, and turns knobs to synchronize individual motor speeds.
- Reads yardage clock and records production, lot numbers and running time.
- Observes webbing coming off dye range for weaving and dyeing defects and notifies supervisor of any problems for proper corrective measures.
- Provides Quality Control with samples of dyed webbing for testing.
- Moves metal cages with dyed webbing to Finishing area, using hand pallet jacks.
- Turns valve to drain used dye from dye pad and cleans paddlers and rollers when changeover is required.
- Inventories dyes and chemicals and notifies Manager as supplies are needed.
- Feeds loomstate webbing into machine using a portable sewing machine to sew strapping ends to maintain continuous flow of product.
- Packs and Doffs cages of dyed web
- Keeps empty cages behind the machine
- Pull out bad web while machine is running
- Empty trash cans, take out empty drums and general housekeeping of the dye line area
- Use proper safety equipment and follow safety procedures (i.e., lockout/tagout
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to communicate effectively.
- Ability to add and subtract three-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10’s and 100’s. Ability to perform these operations using units of American and metric weight measurements, volume and distance.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
- Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Ability to safely use hand pallet jacks, scissors and industrial sewing machine.
- Ability to distinguish color variation.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk and use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly push or pull up to 500 pounds, and frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job includes close vision, distance vision, color vision, and peripheral vision.
