What are the responsibilities and job description for the Optometric Technician/Medical Assistant position at Oppenheimer Eye Clinic?
As a technician, your main duty will be to help the optometrist with eye examinations. Your job duties will also involve assisting with patient eye care and examination, helping with the maintenance of patient records and handling some technical duties involving equipment and eyeglass preparation along with answering phone, scheduling future appointments, triage, and running medical testing.
Previous medical office experience preferred but willing to train the right person. Applicant must be able to interact with the public in a positive and professional manner. Excellent administrative, strong organizational skills and multi-tasking abilities required. Must speak and write fluent English, Bilingual a plus.
- Ensure high-quality patient care
- Maintain a professional atmosphere and appearance of doctor’s office and pretest room
- Understand ocular terminology and diseases and know the ocular abbreviations
- Explain to the patient the types of preliminary examinations
- Complete necessary paperwork and perform testing on patients prior to doctor examination
- Promote visual field testing and retinal screenings to eligible patients
- Perform exam pre-screening
- Review prescriptions and/or patient information carefully and identify special needs
Patient preparation
- Take patient medical histories
- Conduct preliminary eye exams and vision tests (like visual acuity, peripheral vision, color vision, eye muscle function)
- Administer eye drops as needed
Diagnostic testing
- Operate specialized equipment like autorefractors, lensometers and tonometers for measuring aspects of vision and eye health
Patient education
- Explain procedures and tests to patients
- Answer questions about medications, eyewear and eye care
Administrative support
- Schedule appointments
- Maintain patient records
- Prepare exam rooms and sterilize equipment
- Order and inventory supplies
Assisting with Procedures
- Help the optometrist with in-office procedures, such as contact lens fittings
