Position Summary
The Ophthalmic Technician works closely with ophthalmologists and optometrists to provide high-quality patient care by performing diagnostic testing, preparing patients for exams, assisting with procedures, and ensuring accurate documentation. This role requires strong technical skills, attention to detail, and a patient-centered approach.
Key Responsibilities
- Greet patients, take medical/ocular histories, and record current medications and allergies.
- Measure and record visual acuity, intraocular pressure, pupil reactions, and other preliminary tests.
- Perform diagnostic tests such as:
- Visual fields
- Optical coherence tomography (OCT)
- Fundus photography
- Topography and IOLs
- Assist ophthalmologists during examinations and minor in-office procedures.
- Administer eye drops and topical medications as directed.
- Educate patients on procedures, treatments, and post-visit instructions.
- Maintain, clean, and calibrate ophthalmic instruments and equipment.
- Ensure accurate and timely documentation in electronic medical records (EMR).
- Support clinic flow by preparing rooms, managing supplies, and coordinating patient care.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required; college coursework in health sciences preferred.
- Previous experience in ophthalmology or optometry setting is highly desirable.
- Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) or higher credential preferred, but not always required.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to multitask in a fast-paced clinical environment.
- Proficiency with electronic medical records and diagnostic equipment.
