Job Summary
The Lead Ophthalmic Technician is an advanced-level position including a wide variety of clerical, technical, and patient related functions. The Lead Ophthalmic Technician performs all of the duties of the ophthalmic technician with greater independence, as well as provides training to all new employees as well as continued training and education to current employees. They will also spend time managing schedules, supplies and ensuring quality assurance and compliance.

In addition the Lead Ophthalmic Technician is also a mentor and role model for the Ophthalmic Technicians and functions as a lead worker for support staff.

Duties

  • Perform patient intake procedures by collecting comprehensive medical histories and documenting symptoms accurately.
  • Prepare patients for examinations by conducting initial assessments, explaining procedures, and ensuring comfort.
  • Assist ophthalmologists during eye exams by setting up equipment, maintaining aseptic technique, and ensuring proper calibration of diagnostic tools.
  • Conduct optical testing including visual acuity assessments, refraction tests, and intraocular pressure measurements using specialized equipment.
  • Manage electronic medical records (EMR) system platform to document patient information securely and efficiently.
  • Maintain a sterile environment through proper aseptic techniques during procedures to prevent infection and ensure patient safety.
  • Handle inventory management of ophthalmic supplies.
  • Collaborate with team members on medical coding and billing processes to ensure accurate documentation for insurance claims.
  • Provide education to patients about eye health, medication instructions, and post-procedure care tailored to patients as needed.
  • Uphold confidentiality standards in accordance with HIPAA regulations while handling sensitive medical records and patient data.
  • Provide training to new technicians as well as continue training and education to current technicians.

Qualifications

  • Previous experience in a medical office setting or clinic environment is highly preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology related to ophthalmology and general healthcare.
  • Proficiency with EMR systems for documentation and scheduling.
  • Experience with optical equipment including visual acuity charts, tonometers, autorefractors, and slit lamps is desirable.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform patient care tasks with compassion, professionalism, and attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of HIPAA regulations to ensure patient privacy and data security at all times.
  • Familiarity with medical billing, coding practices, and insurance verification processes is a plus.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities at once while maintaining high-quality service standards.

Pay: $20.00 - $25.00 per hour
