TITLE: Wastewater Operator A, B, or C


SALARY: Operator C: $25.00 – $37.50/hr ($52,000 – $78,000 annually)

Operator B: $26.92 – $40.38/hr ($56,000 – $84,000 annually)

Operator A: $28.37 – $42.79/hr ($59,000 – $89,000 annually)

Pay within range is based on experience, certifications, and licensing level


SCHEDULE:

  • 1st Shift: 7:00 AM – 3:00 PM
  • 2nd Shift: 3:00 PM – 11:00 PM
  • 3rd Shift: 11:00 PM – 7:00 AM
  • $1/hr shift differential for night shifts


OVERVIEW:

Under the direction of plant leadership, this position is responsible for operating and maintaining wastewater treatment facilities to control the flow and processing of wastewater, sludge, and effluent. This role involves monitoring system performance, interpreting operational data, and ensuring compliance with state regulations. It plays a critical role in ensuring environmental safety and operational efficiency in a dynamic utility environment.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Operate and monitor wastewater treatment systems, including flow management, sludge processing, and effluent quality control.
  • Observe and adjust operating conditions based on meter readings, gauges, and laboratory test results.
  • Collect samples and perform routine laboratory testing and analysis.
  • Maintain accurate shift logs and operational records.
  • Inspect, troubleshoot, and maintain pumps, valves, and mechanical equipment.
  • Respond to plant emergencies and coordinate service crews when necessary.
  • Assist in training and mentoring Operator Trainees.
  • Respond to customer inquiries or escalate issues as needed.
  • Follow all safety procedures and plant protocols.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support operational needs.


REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Must hold a current State of Florida Class A, B, or C Wastewater Operator License.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver’s license.
  • Experience in wastewater treatment plant operations preferred.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Clear and effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical documents, regulations, and operating procedures.
  • Analytical skills for interpreting operational data and making process adjustments.
  • Basic mathematical skills, including calculations involving decimals, percentages, and data analysis.
  • Proficiency in operating and maintaining treatment plant equipment and laboratory tools.
  • Strong record-keeping skills and familiarity with computer systems.
  • Attention to detail and ability to follow instructions accurately.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across departments and with the public when necessary.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Work is performed in a wastewater treatment plant environment with exposure to varying weather and potential hazards. Requires walking, standing, bending, and stooping for extended periods. Must be able to lift and carry 20–50 lbs regularly and occasionally lift over 100 lbs. Visual acuity is necessary for inspecting equipment and reading instruments. Exposure to mechanical systems, chemicals, and environmental hazards is expected.


MUST HAVES FOR ROLE:

  • Must hold an active Florida Class A, B, or C Wastewater Operator License.
  • Must possess a valid Florida driver’s license.
  • Candidates must consent to and pass a background check and drug screening as part of the hiring process.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
