Operation Kindness is seeking a Shelter Veterinarian to join our team! Operation Kindness is a pioneer in Texas for assisting animals in need of veterinary care, companionship and most of all, a home.

Details about the role:

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: Reports to Chief Veterinarian

POSITION OVERVIEW: Performs veterinary services for shelter and adopted animals (14 days post adoption or case by case). Maximizes the use of resources to ensure animal resident health utilizing cost effective strategies. Provides medical care as well as humane care and treatment to all animals in accordance with the policies and procedures established by ASV (American Shelter Veterinarians) guidelines and Operation Kindness.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conducts, diagnoses, and evaluates treatment plans, disease control measures, and hands-on medical treatment and progress of animals including but not limited to:
  • Heartworm treatment.
  • Vaccination protocols.
  • Nutrition and feeding protocols.
  • Parasite control measures.
  • Housing and sanitation.
  • Treatment protocols for routine infectious diseases.
  • Preventative medicine procedures.
  • Emergency evaluation, treatment, and procedures.
  • Improvement of health and quality of life and/or alleviation of suffering.
  • Surgical Responsibilities
  • o Perform ovariohysterectomies and castrations on cats and dogs.
  • o Perform other surgical procedures when deemed appropriate for adoptability and/or quality of life.
  • o Supervise all aspects of the procedures including anesthesia, pain management, and post-operative care of the patient.
  • Ensures animals who require care from a specialist receive the appropriate referral.
  • Follow progress of all patients placed on treatment, keeping records of all treatments and final outcomes in coordination with Chief Veterinarian, Medical Manager(s) and Staff.
  • Collaborates with other departments regarding medical care and treatment of shelter animals.
  • Communicate with clients and fosters regarding care and treatment of animals, in collaboration with Medical Manager(s) and Staff.
  • In collaboration with the Medical Manager(s), supports the training of Veterinary Technicians and Assistants, constructively communicating areas of strength and opportunities for growth.
  • Nurtures a safe and welcoming working and training environment.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned/required.

General Responsibilities

· Reports suspicion of animal abuse or neglect to any Manager or above immediately.

· Reports any unsafe working conditions to any Manager or above immediately..

· Maintains client, donor, volunteer, and staff confidentiality at all times.

· Follows SOPs and other safety regulations at all times.

· Completes all necessary and requested training in a timely manner in accordance with shelter policy.

· Attends staff meetings.

· Participates in shelter events as requested by Supervisor.

· Performs other duties as requested or assigned.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

· Graduate of an accredited school of veterinary medicine.

· Licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the state of Texas.

· Maintains personal DEA license.

· In good standing with Texas State Board of Veterinary Medicine.

· Maintains appropriate records of Continuing Education.

· Basic computer skills.

· Experience in HQHV Spay/Neuter preferred.

· Supports Operations Kindness’s mission and understands how it is organized and functions as a non-profit organization.

· Proven knowledge of animal behavior and illnesses.

· Proven excellent verbal and written communication skills.

· Proven ability to effectively manage a team.

· Must be eligible to be a driver for Operation Kindness.

· Is able to work equally well with staff members, clients, and volunteers.

· Is able to relate well to persons with varied backgrounds and beliefs.

· Has a positive attitude; open to innovated ideas.

· Physical Effort: Position requires lifting and carrying animals and shelter materials weighting up to 40 lbs.; when animals or materials weigh over 40 lbs., another staff member will assist in the lifting and carrying. Position also requires sitting or standing for extended periods of time and speaking over the telephone. Subject to climbing, kneeling lifting, sitting, standing, stooping, bending, and walking to perform the essential functions. Handling dogs and cats with a variety of sizes and temperaments.

· Working Conditions: May be exposed to unpleasant odors, noises, and animal feces. May be exposed to bites, scratches, and animal diseases.
