Position Summary
The Director of Philanthropy is a mission-driven leader responsible for expanding the organization’s culture of philanthropy and driving sustainable revenue growth. This role leads individual giving, cultivates strong donor relationships, oversees fundraising strategy, and elevates the organization’s storytelling and brand presence. In partnership with the Executive Director, staff, and Board of Directors, the Director of Philanthropy ensures long-term financial vitality through thoughtful relationship management, compelling communication, and high-impact fundraising initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
Fundraising Strategy & Revenue Growth
- Lead the development and execution of comprehensive fundraising plans, including annual giving, major gifts, campaigns, and sponsorship strategies.
- Develop and implement innovative approaches to diversify revenue and strengthen the donor pipeline.
- Analyze fundraising performance data to refine strategies and report progress to leadership and the Board.
Donor Relations & Stewardship
- Build and deepen relationships with individual donors across all giving levels, with a focus on growing the individual donor portfolio.
- Create and implement donor cultivation and stewardship strategies that encourage long-term engagement and increased giving.
- Oversee donor communications, recognition programs, and impact reporting to ensure high-quality donor experiences.
Marketing, Communications & Storytelling
- Lead the development of compelling narratives that communicate impact, strengthen brand awareness, and inspire philanthropic support.
- Partner with communications staff to ensure alignment between fundraising messaging, marketing strategy, and organizational identity.
- Utilize digital platforms and social media to enhance fundraising reach and engagement.
Events & Donor Experiences
- Direct all fundraising and cultivation events—from concept through execution—to deepen donor engagement and strengthen the brand.
- Oversee sponsorship outreach, guest engagement strategies, program design, logistics, and post-event stewardship.
- Ensure all events reflect the organization’s mission, values, and fundraising objectives.
Organizational Leadership & Collaboration
- Serve as a key member of the leadership team and foster a positive, mission-driven organizational culture.
- Partner with program and communications teams to embed storytelling and donor engagement across the organization.
- Coordinate and mentor staff, volunteers, and board members involved in fundraising activities.
Executive Director & Board Partnership
- Advise and partner with the Executive Director on fundraising strategy, donor relationships, and marketing opportunities.
- Collaborate on major donor cultivation, solicitations, and presentations.
- Support the Board through training, engagement strategies, and regular development reporting.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required.
- 7 years of progressive fundraising experience, including major gifts, individual giving, and event-based fundraising.
- Proven success creating, formalizing, and scaling comprehensive fundraising strategies that drive significant organizational growth.
- Experience leveraging social media and digital platforms to enhance fundraising and engagement.
- Demonstrated success growing and retaining individual donors.
- Experience working with or supporting a Board of Directors.
- Proven marketing and communications expertise, with strong storytelling abilities.
- Exceptional interpersonal, communication, and relationship-building skills.
- Strong organizational, analytical, and project management abilities.
- Passion for the mission and commitment to ethical, donor-centered fundraising.
