The Maintenance Technician reports directly to the Executive Director and is responsible for ensuring the safe, functional, and well-maintained condition of the Teresa Shelter and Maria House. This position performs routine, preventative, and as-needed maintenance tasks, with a strong emphasis on safety, responsiveness, and compliance in high-use residential environments.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following. Other duties may be assigned as needed.
FACILITY MAINTENANCE & OPERATIONS:
· Perform routine walk-through inspections of Teresa Shelter and Maria House (interior and exterior)
· Identify, report, and address maintenance, safety, and repair needs
· Complete work orders and document completed tasks
· Respond promptly to urgent maintenance and safety issues
· Inspect doors, locks, exits, lighting, and safety features regularly
PREVENTATIVE & ROUTINE MAINTENANCE
· Perform minor plumbing repairs (leaks, clogs, fixtures)
· Replace light bulbs, batteries, filters, and other consumables as needed
· Clean dryer vents, HVAC vents, screens, and exhaust systems per established schedule
· Inspect and maintain small equipment and tools
· Conduct monthly and quarterly preventative maintenance checks on building systems
· Assist with seasonal maintenance (winterization, weather-related preparation)
SAFETY & COMPLIANCE
· Support fire, health, licensing, and life-safety inspections
· Monitor and test emergency lighting, exit signs, and fire extinguishers
· Report hazards, safety concerns, or compliance issues to the Executive Director immediately
· Maintain maintenance logs
· Follow safety procedures when using tools, equipment, and chemicals
GROUNDS, VEHICLES, & SPECIAL PROJECTS
· Ensure agency vehicles receive routine maintenance and inspections
· Perform painting and light renovation projects as needed
· Supervise and assist volunteers on maintenance or painting projects
· Oversee waste management needs
· Identify and facilitate regular landscaping and trash/debris cleanup projects for volunteers with the Volunteer Coordinator
COMMUNICATION & COLLABORATION
· Communicate regularly with Executive Director regarding completed work, concerns, and upcoming needs
· Coordinate with vendors and contractors as needed
· Participate in maintenance planning and provide input on repair or replacement needs
· Attend Buildings & Grounds Committee meetings as scheduled
ON-CALL & AS-NEEDED RESPONSIBILITIES
· Serve on-call for maintenance emergencies as needed
· Respond to weather-related or unexpected facility issues
· Perform other duties as assigned to support agency operations
QUALIFICATIONS
Education, Experience, and Skills:
· Maintenance, facilities, or related experience required
· Ability to operate, repair, and maintain small equipment and tools
· Basic knowledge of plumbing, electrical, and building systems
· Strong organizational and time-management skills
· Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks
· Ability to maintain confidentiality
· Creative problem-solving skills
· Sensitivity to issues of poverty and homelessness

PHYSICAL, MENTAL, AND ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS
· Ability to stand and walk on carpet and tile floors
· Ability to sit, reach, squat, kneel, grip, climb, carry, bend, and push/pull
· Requires occasional lifting of 50 pounds or more
· Occasional exposure to chemicals, fumes, office equipment noise, and slippery surfaces
· Ability to work in both indoor and outdoor environments
