What are the responsibilities and job description for the Literacy Tutor (Elementary) position at OPEN?
About Open School and the Literacy Liberators Fellowship
Open School, in collaboration with the Reynolds School District, is tackling the urgent need to accelerate student learning in literacy. Too many students are falling behind in reading — and we believe our communities hold the key to helping them thrive.
- No formal teaching or tutoring experience is required.
We are looking for community members — parents, family members, recent grads, and local leaders — who believe in our kids and want to support their success through focused, small-group tutoring.
You’ll participate in a fellowship designed to equip you with the tools, skills, and support you need to make a real impact in students’ academic journeys.
Fellowship Training (December 2025):
- 2-week commitment beginning December 8, 2025
- Monday through Friday (same as regular hours)
- In-person sessions
- Training topics include family partnerships, how to share data, behavior support strategies, classroom culture building, tutoring strategies, instructional skills, student engagement, and leadership development
Fellowship Qualifications:
Applicants must:
- Be 18 years or olderBe legally authorized to work in the U.S.
- Have a high school diploma or GED
- Be proficient in English and able to support students in at least one core subject area (math, reading, writing, etc.)
- Be open to placement in any local school that needs support (reasonable accommodations will be considered)
Compensation and Benefits:
- Compensation: $25/ hour
- Schedule: Mon–Thur, 1 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Fri, 11:00 am - 3:00 pm.
- These positions require a full school-year commitment. We are looking for individuals who are deeply invested in seeing students grow and achieve — and who can commit to supporting them consistently throughout the school year.
- Tutors who leave early or do not fulfill expectations may be ineligible for future roles and may be asked to return materials shared during training.
The Role of a Liberator:
Once hired as a school-year tutor, also called a Liberator, you will:
- Support small groups of students in reading after school.
- Tutors will be placed in afterschool programs in elementary schools in Reynolds School District, working with small student groups using curriculum and guidance provided by Open School
