WIC Nutritionist - Level 1

Open Door is seeking a WIC Nutritionist- Level 1 responsible for providing high-quality nutrition and public health assessment, education, and counseling to prenatal women, postpartum women, infants, and children under age five. This role requires a strong interest in nutrition and breastfeeding, along with the ability to deliver evidence-based guidance in a culturally competent manner. The ideal candidate is a self-motivated team player who thrives in a fast-paced environment and enjoys working with a diverse community.

Responsibilities:

• Conduct a complete nutrition assessment, determine nutrition risk and enroll participants
• Conduct a breastfeeding assessment, and provide participant-centered counseling that helps a mother initiate breastfeeding, establish a milk supply, exclusively breastfeed and continue breastfeeding
• Address common breastfeeding concerns and issue breast pumps
• Prescribe, tailor, authorize, issue, and reissue WIC food packages
• Review and approve formula requests requiring medical documentation in consultation with the Health Care Provider and Level 2 Nutritionist
• Identify the need for an individual care plan and refer to a Level 2 WIC Nutritionist; provide participant centered counseling for high-risk participants, and work in conjunction with the WIC team to provide continuity of care.
• Provide and document participant-centered nutrition education/counseling (individual/family sessions and facilitated group discussions) for participants
• Document nutrition services provided in a timely manner, including referrals and follow-up to referrals
• Take anthropometric measurements and document and interpret medical referral data
• Track participants progress and document outcomes efficiently and effectively
• Complete all required annual training and meet ongoing continuing education requirements

Requirements:

• Nutrition and Dietetics Technician, Registered (DTR/NDTR)
• Bachelor’s degree in Nutrition from an accredited college or university
• Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate health-related field from an accredited college or university with at least 6 credit hours in nutrition
• Bilingual English/Spanish proficient in providing WIC services using a medical interpretation service
• WIC Program experience is preferred but not required
