Starting wage: $28,963 annualized/$14.46 to start (71-C)

Purpose Statement

The Custodian maintains an attractive, sanitary and safe facility for students, staff and public, provides equipment and furniture arrangements for meetings, classroom activities and events, and minimizes property damage, loss and liability exposure.

This position reports to the Head Custodian of the Open Classroom.

Note: This position typically works 2:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. 

Minimum Qualifications

1. High school diploma or equivalent
2. Ability to pass a fingerprint and criminal background check
3. Valid Driver’s license and evidence of insurability
4. Able to follow safety practices and procedures, including industrial cleaning methods, Team Cleaning, Integrated Pest Management (I.P.M.) and Green Cleaning concepts
5. Speak, read, write, and present professionally, analyze, and interpret English written and verbal communications

Preferred Qualifications

1. 1 years of job-related experience
2. Supervisory experience
3. Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite skills
4. Spanish or other language proficiency, including ability to read, write, speak, and understand

Essential Functions

1. Arrange furnishings and equipment to provide adequate preparations for meetings, classroom activities and events
2. Assist the Head Custodian with snow removal to maintain a safe environment
3. Assist the Head Custodian in maintaining supplies and equipment (e.g. cleaning solutions, paper products, vacuum, mops, etc.) to maintain a sanitary, healthy, safe, and attractive environment
4. Clean assigned school facilities (e.g. classrooms, offices, gym, restrooms, multipurpose rooms, grounds, etc.) to maintain a sanitary, healthy, safe and attractive environment while utilizing industrial cleaning methods, team cleaning, I.P.M., and Green Cleaning concepts and cleaning tools such as Protexus Electostatic sprayers with Pathosans cleaner
5. Participate in meetings and training (e.g. blood borne pathogens, cleaning solvents, floor care, first aid, etc.) to receive information on new and/or improved procedures
6. Prepare facility for daily operations (e.g. opening gates, building access doors, disarming security systems, raising flags, crosswalk signs, minor repairs, etc.) to ensure facilities are operational and safe for occupancy
7. Repair minor furniture and equipment damage to ensure that items are available and in safe working condition
8. Respond to immediate safety and/or operational concerns (e.g. facility damage, injured and ill students, alarms, etc.) to take appropriate action to resolve immediate safety issues and maintain a functioning educational environment
9. Secure facilities and grounds to minimize property damage, equipment loss and potential liability to organization
10. Substitute for Head Custodian as needed when Assistant Head Custodians are not available to provide coverage that supports efficient department operations
11. Communicate effectively with diverse individuals and groups of people while maintaining confidentiality and building positive working relationships with employees and stakeholders.
12. Work under limited supervision, utilizing time-management and prioritization strategies, accurately processing detailed information and meeting deadlines. 
13. Support a team environment by collaborating with own and other work units to effectively perform the duties of the position.
14. Adapt to changing work priorities and work with frequent interruptions, as required.
15. Speak, read, write, analyze, understand and follow written and verbal communication in English including grammar and punctuation; listen to, and understand information and ideas presented verbally or in writing.
16. Maintain regular and predictable attendance to fulfill job requirements efficiently and effectively.
17. As needed, roll, push, pull, bend, reach, stoop, and lift up to 50 pounds.
18. Other duties as assigned.

Working Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 10% sitting, 45% walking, and 45% standing. This job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment.
