Part-Time ESL Teacher (.5 FTE)
Job Duties Include:
- Provide small group or individual English Language Development Instruction to English Language Learners throughout the district in accordance with the minimum requirements set by Section 41 of Public Act 120. This includes:
- Creating lesson plans
- Correcting written and spoken errors
- Finding ways to motivate students and encourage class participation
- Tailoring activities to meet the needs of individual pupils
- Testing students to gauge progress and understanding
- Leveraging technology and multimedia resources, such as computers and movies, to enhance learning opportunities
- Use language teaching strategies to increase English proficiency for students who speak a language other than English at home.
- Collaborate with and serve as a resource to classroom teachers to help EL students access academic content and grow language skills.
- Advocate for the needs of the EL students.
- Evaluate the language needs of students whose families speak a language other than English at home and recommend appropriate language support.
- Administer a language screener to potential ELs as identified through the Home Language Survey.
- Maintain accurate EL cumulative files and communicate changes to Student Services.
- Develop and implement Individual Learning Plans (ILPs).
- Participate in ongoing professional development and attend PLC and department meetings.
- Administer the WIDA ACCESS for ELLs assessment.
- Serve as a liaison between the school and EL families, connecting them with school events.
- Communicate language needs and progress of the ELs with classroom teachers, administrators, and families.
- Maintain EL Policy Handbook, WIDA Standards, and other program-specific documents, including programming guide and required forms.
- Create a schedule that best meets the needs of the EL students.
- Create individual language goals for students who benefit from language support.
Requirements:
- ESL Endorsement (NS) or Bilingual Endorsement (YF) or willing to complete the program for endorsement
- K-12 teaching certificate; Spanish preferred
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Ability to maintain accurate records
- Strong collaboration skills
- Flexibility to work with multiple grade levels and content area teachers and students
- Bilingual skills are desirable but not required
