Salary: Stipend $1,000 per client ($850 for labor, $75 per prenatal and post partum visit)


Performs under the direct supervision of the Public Health Nurse Manager/Director of Clinical Services, provides emotional support, physical comfort, and education to help clients make informed decisions during their labor. Performs functions required to ensure clinical documentation.

This position will serve in the Clinical Services Division of the Onslow County Health Department. Hours will be PRN and on-call. The doula will meet at minimum one time pre-natal, and one time post partum. The doula will be available for the duration of active labor (5-6 cm and regular contractions) and for up to one hour post delivery to assist with breastfeeding.

  • Conduct prenatal assessments to explore birth priorities, fears, concerns, and make plans with how to best work with the client.
  • Create a birth plan with the client including preferences for comfort options and use of medications.
  • Educate client on common changes that take place with your body during pregnancy, stages of labor, and beneficial birthing positions.
  • Document the prenatal meeting including: patient preferences for birth plan, goals, and preferences for the birthing experience, and who is in the support network
  • Document labor and delivery including: labor timeline, interventions, support provided and the patient response, any labor interventions such as induction, epidural or cesarean section, and support provided such as massage, breathing exercises, comfort measures, emotion support and any other techniques applied, patient responses (how did the patient cope, what worked, what didn’t, any changes in preference during labor), birth outcome (baby’s time born, weight, condition, APGAR)
  • Document post partum meeting including: family’s emotional and physical wellbeing, provide breastfeeding support, social support, patient feedback, outcome and maternal complications
  • Maintain professional growth and development through the completion of required competencies

Specialized knowledge and skill in the birthing experience and labor and delivery, including birth plan creation, stages of labor, newborn care, breastfeeding, comfort measures and coping techniques, can identify healthcare team members, and understands medical interventions. Broad knowledge in health care ethics, documentation in the medical record, and quality assurance. Sophisticated knowledge of current scientific information regarding the prenatal, labor, and post partum periods and the ability to relate this information to clients, professionals, and the public. Fundamental knowledge of current principles and practices of public health and program coordination. Ability to interpret policy and protocols into operational procedures and work priorities. Skill in organizing and coordinating the work of others. Full range of skills in presenting ideas orally and in writing clearly and concisely.

Certified doula through a known organization; operate an independent business or is a sole proprietor; high school diploma with preference for a two or four year degree in public health, science or medical field. Must have strong interpersonal skills and demonstrate culturally competency. Preference for bi-lingual applicants.
