What are the responsibilities and job description for the Deputy Planning and Development Director position at Onslow County?
The Planning and Development Department is comprised of four divisions to include Zoning, Planning, Permitting, and Building Inspections. This position will perform difficult professional and administrative work overseeing a portfolio of the divisions within the department and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the general direction of the Planning and Development Director.

Considerable senior level management experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

- Manages performance and completes annual performance evaluations for direct reports
- Assists the Director in providing supervision, strategic leadership, and execution of the vision and mission of the Planning and Development Department.
- Establishes processes and procedures to improve efficiency and effectiveness of division functions through the leveraging of technology to create innovation and improved standards of customer care.
- Responsible for overseeing the operations of divisions as assigned.
- Assists in instructing, training, and mentoring employees; executive level supervision and leadership development for direct reports and providing leadership training and development for the Department as a whole.
- Assists with the Planning and Development Department’s budget preparation and administration.
- Analyzes and evaluates information for compliance and conformity of the North Carolina General Statutes and regulations.
- Responds to complaints and inquiries from citizens, contractors, and the general public.
- Periodically accompanies staff on field visits or consultations for quality control assessments.
- Meets and corresponds with individuals and professional groups to gather feedback and address concerns to include individual meetings or group presentations.
- Assumes oversight of the Planning and Development Department in the Director's absence.
- Performs assigned functions as a Disaster Ready Team (DRT) member, if appointed or volunteer.
- Performs related tasks as required.
