NATURE OF WORK:
An employee in this class provides support to the Director by writing specialized menus for the district's students in all grade levels. The employee participates in the development, implementation, and oversight of the policies and procedures that govern the school system's child nutrition program. The employee exercises discretionary judgment within broad policies and procedures. Errors by the employee could result in severe allergic reactions of students, loss of instruction time, and/or loss of money. The employee receives general direction. The employee may provide general supervision to several site managers in operational feeding support.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
- Applied working knowledge of menu planning, recipe development, storage, sanitation, and safety
- Significant knowledge of nutrition as it applies to school age children
- Knowledge in the application, care, and use of food service equipment
- Oral and written communication skills
- Ability to operate district or personal vehicle to travel independently and respond to emergencies
- Apply professional knowledge and administrative ability to assist in implementing a district-wide school nutrition program
- Dissect ingredients for known allergies
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with administrators, teachers, pupils, subordinate personnel, and the general public
- Analyze situations accurately and adopt a decisive, appropriate, course of action
EDUCATION AND TRAINING:
- Bachelor's degree in dietetics or nutrition required
- Registered dietitian with the Commission of Dietetic Registration, or a Licensed Dietitian/Nutritionist, licensed by NC Board of Dietetics/Nutrition preferred
- Experience in a leadership role preferred
- Must possess and maintain a food protection manager certification recognized by the North Carolina Health Department
- Knowledge of the USDA regulations and guidelines required
- Must have a valid driver's license
TERM OF EMPLOYMENT: 12 months
SALARY: Salary Grade 64
FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist Manager in work organization, preparation of work schedules, food & supply orders.
- Ability to motivate cafeteria staff members to follow school, local, state and federal rules, regulations, policies and procedures and in ensuring cafeteria managers meet expectations.
Completes required reports.
Prepares and presents management training sessions on diet protocols, menu changes, and proper food service.
Works with School Nutrition Director to develop cycle menus.
Plans cost effective menus.
Maintains database of students with unique dietary needs.
Verifies quality of products received.
Be on-call to handle emergency situations.
Inspects facilities for cleanliness, health, and safety.
Markets/promotes the school lunch program.
Plans menus that are nutritional as necessary to meet meal patters of SBP and NSLP.
Assists with all catering events and organizing any necessary additional labor for catering events.
Participates in Manager meetings.
Ability to travel to and from schools and work independently.
Attend seminars, conferences, workshops, classes, etc. as appropriate to enhance and maintain knowledge of trends and developments in the field of food service.
Completes other duties as assigned.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to be physically active, which includes, but is not limited to, standing, pushing, pulling, squatting, bending, sitting, and walking, including repetitive motions.
Ability to stand in excess of 6 hours.
Ability to lift 15-30 pounds routinely and 30-100 pounds occasionally.
Must be able to facilitate the evacuation of students during emergency situations and/or drills.
- Must be able to visually, auditorily, and physically monitor student performance and conduct.
