Job Summary

TITLE: School Nurse

QUALIFICATIONS: Possess a valid current Registered Nurse license to practice nursing in the State of Alabama, graduated from an accredited school of nursing approved by the Alabama Board of Nursing, and possess current BLS certification. Must meet background clearance requirements as specified by Alabama Statutes and State Board of Education regulations.

REPORTS TO: School Principals and Superintendent

SUPERVISES: Students

CONTRACT DAYS: 187 days

SALARY: Salary is based on appropriate step on the approved OCS salary schedule.

EVALUATION: Performance will be evaluated in accordance with the Board’s policy on evaluation of personnel.

JOB GOAL: Provide health services to students within the school system according to the accepted Standards of School Nursing Practice as published by the American Nurses Association and the National Association of School Nurses; The practice of school nursing shall be within the Guidelines and Nurse Practice Act published by the Alabama Board of Nursing.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The following duties are normal for this job. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
1. Attend school during assigned hours.
2. Adhere to school system rules, administration procedures, local board policy, and state and federal rules and regulations.
3. Attend faculty and other assigned meetings.
4. Participate in the State Board and system required in-service and professional development.
5. Assists in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct.
6. Perform reasonable duties necessary for the safe and effective operation of the school.
7. Exhibit positive human relations skills and professional ethics.
8. Demonstrate proficiency in written and oral communication.
9. Demonstrate competency in the use of computers and available technology.
10. Contribute to the overall development of an effective school program.
11. Engage in personal professional growth and demonstrate professional ethics and leadership.
12. Provides nursing and personal care for students.
13. Serves to assist in emergency/crisis situations within the school system.
14. Knowledge of current general medical and pediatric nursing practices.
15. Record, maintain and submit necessary records and reports.
16. Work constructively with parents, students, and staff through appropriate avenues.
17. Obtain information on student’s past and present health history utilizing all available sources of information and correctly enter information in an electronic patient history record and maintaining the health records of students.
18. Provide professional learning on health related topics for school personnel.
19. Provide training for medication assistants and evaluate their performance in compliance with policies, procedures, and guidelines in the administration of medication to students.
20. Implements/supervise/assist health program activities such as vision, hearing, spinal, height, weight, asthma and scoliosis screening, flu shots, medication administration and documentation, immunization assessment and follow-up, employee health screening, and any health related event.
21. Visits students and families in the home environment to assess, detect, and manage health concerns and problems as needed.
22. Counsels with students and their families concerning problems such as school age pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, and alcohol and other drugs use in order to facilitate responsible decision making practices.
23. Provide coverage for activities after school hours, which could include over-night stay.
24. Communicate concerns and requests to teacher in an appropriate and timely manner.
25. Serves as a health advocate for the students and school community.
26. Maintain the privacy and confidentiality of student’s health information.
27. Maintains confidentiality regarding school/workplace matters in accordance with state and federal law.
28. Must exhibit the physical strength for lifting and emotional ability and dexterity to perform required work and move about as needed to meet student needs.
29. Perform other duties as might be reasonably assigned by the Principal or Superintendent or by direction of the Board.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Requires sufficient physical strength, mobility, dexterity, stamina, and acuity to perform job responsibilities. Subject to a wide variety of behavioral situations associated with developmentally-delayed students. Duties are normally performed in a school/classroom environment. Duties may be occasionally performed on field trips away from school. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. Duties may involve risk resulting from attending to students’ physical or sanitation/hygiene needs. Significant standing; some walking, moving, climbing, carrying, bending, kneeling, crawling, reaching, handling, pushing and pulling. Must have the ability to lift or move 50 lbs.
