The Vocational Rehabilitation Consultant is responsible for the overall success of OneAmerica’s objectives by providing timely and accurate support to our client companies and the Claims department. This individual assesses employability, promote restoration of function, and facilitate return to work. The Vocational Rehabilitation Consultant initiates and facilitates case management and other ancillary services to assure optimum outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
Candidates local to Portland, ME will be expected to work Hybrid. For candidates not local to Portland, ME, remote work will be considered. The candidate will also be expected to physically return to the office in CA, IN or ME as business needs dictate or for team building and collaboration.
Consistent with applicable pay transparency laws, we disclose the compensation range for this position: $79,500 - $132,500 annually. Actual compensation will be determined by factors such as education, experience, geographical location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. In addition to base pay, this role is eligible for an annual incentive program.

The Vocational Rehabilitation Consultant initiates and facilitates case management and other ancillary services to assure optimum outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
- Consistently adheres to the documented workflow guidelines and established procedures.
- Provides excellent customer service to both internal and external customers (claimants, employers, re-insurers, etc.).
- Provides clear and ongoing communications with other business partners both inside and outside of the department (QA, Appeals, Training, Programs Mgrs., Marketing, etc.).
- Conducts comprehensive return-to-work assessments on all cases for which rehabilitation services will be provided, including a well-defined action plan documented for each claim and supported by a cost benefit analysis. If a case is deferred for services, a business justification should also be clearly outlined in the individual case file.
- Partners with Claims associates to determine extent and type of assistance provided considering factors such as ability to handle Social Security process, difficulty of case, benefit duration and potential for return to work.
- Conducts comprehensive own occupation assessments and transferrable skills analyses on cases referred for claim determination assistance. The assessments/analyses must be credible and include a thorough well documented report and resources utilized.
- Provides vocational counseling assistance to individuals receiving disability benefits and documents activity. Refers to appropriate partners/parties for SSDI eligibility guidance when appropriate.
- Acts as a Team Resource and Participant by answering questions regarding functionality and employability. Provides clear and complete vocational recommendations for short and long-term goals at team meetings. Using network resources, directs vendor services and activities on referrals by outlining and communicating specific service requests and ensuring service quality and correlated expense.
- Educates both internal and external customers about vocational rehabilitation services and benefits of return to work. Provides or coordinates in-service training to claim and clinical staff to enhance staff knowledge.
- Periodically and upon request, provides sales/service support internally and to employers and client companies through questionnaires, presentations and reports.
- Keeps abreast of current technology/legislation and utilizes such to enhance return to work opportunities.
- Documents claim files and systems in the approved format and in a clear, consistent and professional manner.
- Identifies cases with potential for changes in outcome plan.
- Maintains a level of participation and commitment to individual, team, client companies, and OA’s results. Notes any trends that may be affecting liability and advises appropriate parties of such.
- Keeps abreast of policy provisions and policy language on accounts serviced.
- Participates in training and professional development opportunities to ensure continuation of professional designations
- Incumbents must possess training and experience consistent with professionals in the rehabilitation, or related field.
- Vocational Rehabilitation Counselors must have a master’s degree in a field related, but not limited to, Rehabilitation.
- Must possess or obtain, if necessary, a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC) and/or Certified Vocational Evaluator (CVE) professional designation.
- Or any combination of education and experience which would provide an equivalent background
