Role Description This Freelance Journalist internship is a hybrid role based in Cullman, AL, with some flexibility for working from home. Interns will research local and regional stories, conduct interviews, and develop news articles across business, finance, technology, health, and public policy topics. Daily responsibilities include drafting and revising news pieces, preparing press release-style summaries, fact-checking sources, and collaborating with editors to refine story angles. Depending on interest and skills, the intern may assist with basic broadcasting tasks such as recording audio segments, supporting podcast production, or appearing on-air for short news updates. The role requires meeting deadlines, responding to editorial feedback, and upholding journalistic ethics and accuracy.
Qualifications
- Strong writing abilities, including general Writing and News Writing skills, with clear, concise, and engaging storytelling.
- Experience or interest in Press Releases, including translating complex information into accessible public communications.
- Solid Research skills, including source evaluation, fact-checking, and the ability to synthesize information quickly.
- Interest or foundational skills in Broadcasting, such as audio recording, on-air presentation, or podcast support.
- Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a program in Journalism, Communications, Media Studies, English, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
- Strong ethical judgment, attention to detail, and commitment to accuracy and fairness in reporting.
- Comfort conducting interviews in person, over the phone, or via video, and engaging with local community members and organizations.
- Ability to work independently, manage multiple assignments, and meet deadlines in a hybrid work environment.
- Basic familiarity with digital publishing tools, social media platforms, and collaborative tools (e.g., shared documents, project boards) is a plus.
