RN (Flex) - Post Anesthesia Care Unit

Overview:
In addition to general nursing responsible for the delivery of safe, effective, and quality patient-family centered care in the post anesthesia care unit and other areas of perioperative services for all patient populations.
Responsibilities:
  • Assess patient’s postoperative status at intervals according to facility or health care organization policies and procedures to include the patient’s cardiovascular system, respiratory system and airway management needs, neurological system, hemodynamic stability, pain and comfort needs, thermoregulation and mental status.
  • Interpret information accurately from various noninvasive and invasive monitors.
  • Apply the relevant scoring system/discharge criteria for patient transfer (e.g., Aldrete Score, Modified Aldrete Score [i.e., PARSAP], Post Anesthesia Discharge Scoring System [PADSS], White) score accurately as defined by organizational policy.
  • Develop an individualized perianesthesia plan of care. Implement the plan of care including the following interventions: managing patient recovery from anesthesia – general; managing patient recovery from anesthesia – monitored anesthesia care; managing patient recovery from anesthesia – regional; managing patient recovery from anesthesia – local; protecting patient from injury caused by positioning, thermal sources, and extraneous objects; communicating the patient’s current status throughout the perianesthesia continuum of care; providing acute pain and comfort management as needed; administering medications correctly by implementing the 7-rights of safe medication practices (i.e., right patient, right medication, right dose, right time, right route, right indication, right documentation); performing interventions to maintain the integrity of the patient’s wound and tissue perfusion at or above baseline levels; managing the patient’s specimens in the appropriate manner; genitourinary, gastrointestinal, musculoskeletal, endocrine, respiratory, cardiovascular, and neurological systems, and fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base balances at or above baseline levels;
  • Assessing knowledge level of patient or designated support person and providing education regarding the expected psychosocial response, nutritional management, medication management, pain and comfort management, wound management, and expected responses to the operative or invasive procedure.
  • Evaluate the patient’s progress toward attaining outcomes.
  • Has knowledge of the following procedures and ability to perform: Basic cardiac monitoring, arterial line sampling and monitoring, nursing responsibilities for patient on ventilator, fentanyl infusion by epidural catheter, fentanyl infusion by epidural catheter, accurate CVP read, defibrillation – adult and pediatric, airway management – adult and pediatric, code management, malignant hyperthermia, assists with CVP placement and epidurals, assist with reintubation, blood product verification, transfusion and documentation, consent verification, bedside procedure verification and pre-incision time out, set up, monitoring and education of the use of PCA pump.
  • Assesses patient for potential pressure injury and implement preventative measures.
  • Document nursing care completely, accurately, and legibly.
Qualifications:
Education:
Internal & 1199 SEIU:
    • Graduate of accredited nursing program(s).
    • Bachelor's degree in Nursing preferred.

Non 1199 SEIU Candidates:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing.
    • Master's degree in Nursing, preferred.
Experience:
  • Minimum two (2) years Medical-Surgical, or Critical Care, and/or Post Anesthesia Care experience.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Critical thinking, math, and computer skills; Works as a team player.
  • Demonstrates respect and professionalism in all interactions.
  • Excellent oral and communication skills.
  • Decision making and problem solving.
  • Able to read, write, see and hear English.

Licenses, Certifications:

  • Current NY State RN License required
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association, required
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) from the American Heart Association, required
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) from the American Heart Association, required
  • Trauma Care After Resuscitation (TCAR) Certification of Attendance required
  • Pediatric Care After Resuscitation (PCAR) Certification of Attendance required
  • Certified Post Anesthesia Nurse (CPAN), or Certified Ambulatory Perianesthesia Nurse (CAPA) preferred

Physical Requirements:

  • Physically demanding, high-stress environment requiring prolonged periods of standing, reaching, walking throughout the working day.
  • Position will be required to stoops, bends, lifts, carry items weighing up to 35 pounds for routine performance of essential functions.
  • An individual in this position may be exposed to: Adverse indoor environmental conditions, Blood borne pathogens, Blood and body fluids, Physical hazards (e.g., needle pricks, etc.), communicable diseases, chemical hazards, radiation, and repetitive motions.
  • Full range of body motion, able to lift up to 100 pounds, if necessary, to assist lifting and moving patients.
  • Manual and finger dexterity, as well as hand and eye coordination.
  • Corrected vision and hearing to within normal range
  • Frequently sitting at desk working on computer
  • Ability to flex working hours.
