What are the responsibilities and job description for the Retail Assistant Manager position at Once Upon a Child?
Assistant ManagerOnce Upon a Child – Bloomington | Full-Time
Once Upon a Child Bloomington is growing, and we are looking to add an experienced, high-energy Assistant Manager to our leadership team.
This is not a sit-in-the-office management position.
We are looking for someone who genuinely loves retail, enjoys leading people, thrives in a fast-paced environment and takes pride in a store that is organized, productive and running well.
Our ideal Assistant Manager doesn't wait to be told what needs to happen. They notice it, prioritize it and get it moving.
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
A strong leader.
You are comfortable assigning tasks, redirecting conversations, coaching employees and holding people accountable. You can be well-liked by your team while still maintaining high expectations.
Someone with a natural sense of urgency.
We are a high-volume, fast-moving retail store. You move quickly, work efficiently and understand how to keep a team productive without sacrificing quality or customer service.
A problem solver.
When something comes up, your first instinct is to figure out what you can do to solve it. You use good judgment, make confident decisions within your role and know when something truly needs to be escalated.
Someone who takes initiative.
You notice what needs attention and act on it. You don't need a manager standing beside you telling you what to do next.
A coach, not just a task manager.
You enjoy developing employees. You recognize when someone needs help, additional training, redirection or accountability—and you're comfortable providing it.
Customer focused.
You genuinely enjoy helping people. Great customer service isn't something you turn on because it's part of the job; it's naturally how you interact with customers.
Extremely organized and detail-oriented.
You notice the messy rack, incorrect tag, misplaced merchandise, pricing inconsistency or merchandising issue—and you want to fix it. More importantly, you enjoy creating systems and maintaining organization so things don't continually get out of control.
A hands-on retail leader.
Our managers work alongside the team. You will help customers, merchandise, price, organize, process inventory, coach employees and jump in wherever the business needs you.
EXPERIENCE WE VALUE
Previous retail leadership, management, supervisory or coaching experience is important for this position.
Experience with merchandising, apparel, resale, children's clothing, pricing and inventory is a plus, but we are willing to teach the right leader our business.
What is much harder to teach—and what matters most to us—is initiative, leadership, judgment, urgency, organization and follow-through.
THE RIGHT FIT
We are looking for someone who:
- Is positive, energetic and dependable
- Communicates confidently with employees and customers
- Is comfortable having difficult or corrective conversations when necessary
- Holds themselves and others accountable
- Follows through after delegating
- Can prioritize when several things need attention at once
- Maintains high standards even when no one is watching
- Works quickly without sacrificing accuracy
- Enjoys organization and maintaining standards
- Has strong judgment and decision-making skills
- Wants to be part of a team and will jump in wherever needed
- Is receptive to feedback and wants to continue developing as a leader
- Takes ownership instead of saying, "That's not my job"
SCHEDULE & COMMITMENT
This is a full-time leadership position and requires open availability, including the ability to work a retail schedule.
We aren't looking for someone who simply wants their next job. We are looking for someone who loves retail, wants to grow as a leader and is interested in building a long-term future with our company.
As our business continues to grow, we want to develop leaders who can grow with us.
If you're the person who naturally sees what needs to be done, gets people moving and takes pride in leaving a store better than you found it, we'd love to meet you.
