Duties
- Safely operate school buses, transit buses, or paratransit vehicles during assigned routes or as a substitute when needed
- Ensure passenger safety by following traffic laws, vehicle codes, and transportation safety regulations at all times
- Assist passengers with disabilities by providing wheelchair assistance and other mobility support
- Conduct pre-trip inspections to verify vehicle condition, including checking brakes, lights, signals, and emergency equipment
- Respond promptly to traffic changes or emergencies using defensive driving techniques and emergency response procedures for transportation
- Maintain order and manage passenger behavior through effective communication skills and behavior management strategies
- Provide excellent customer service by greeting passengers warmly, answering questions clearly, and ensuring a comfortable ride experience
Qualifications
- Valid commercial driver’s license (CDL) with appropriate endorsements for school bus (WILL TRAIN)
- Proven experience in bus driving, school bus driving, or transit bus operation
- Knowledge of traffic laws, vehicle codes, and state/local commercial driving laws
- First aid certification and CPR training are highly desirable to handle emergency situations confidently
- Experience working with children or seniors is preferred; childcare or senior care experience is a plus
- Ability to perform heavy lifting when assisting passengers or handling equipment safely
- Strong communication skills in English; multilingual abilities are an advantage for diverse communities
- Familiarity with school policies, student discipline procedures, and behavior management techniques
- Quick response capability to traffic changes and emergency stop procedures to ensure passenger safety at all times
