What are the responsibilities and job description for the Substation Engineer position at On Mission Resources?
A growing, well-established electrical engineering firm based in Northeast Ohio is hiring a Substation Engineer to help lead its expanding substation and medium-to-high voltage power practice. This is a hands-on technical lead role with real ownership, not a cog-in-a-large-machine seat.
Why this role is worth a conversation:
- Lead substation projects (12kV to 345kV) from feasibility through final design
- Technically demanding, never-boring work across industrial, commercial, and mission-critical infrastructure
- Small team of sharp, experienced engineers — your work is visible and your voice matters
- Real room to grow as the firm scales its substation and high-voltage practice
- Genuine work-life balance — a culture that values your time outside the office
- Competitive base salary, bonus, full health benefits, retirement with match, PTO, and expense reimbursement
What you will do:
- Lead substation and medium-to-high voltage power projects, locally and nationally
- Take projects from feasibility studies through final design and Issued For Construction
- Develop preliminary layouts, single-line and three-line diagrams, equipment schedules, station elevations, and duct bank details
- Provide P&C (protection and control) coordination and guidance
- Perform ground grid analysis, short circuit studies, protective device coordination, lightning protection, and load flow analysis
- Coordinate foundation and structural steel design with multi-discipline teams
- Organize work for and mentor junior engineers
- Communicate directly with end-users and provide technical guidance through construction
- Operate independently with minimal day-to-day direction
What we are looking for:
- 5 years of power electrical engineering experience in the 12kV to 345kV range
- Substation design experience across schematic design, design development, and construction documents
- Working knowledge of power system analysis software such as ETAP, SKM, WinIGS, or EasyPower
- Proficiency with AutoCAD and Revit
- Advanced understanding of NESC and IEEE codes and standards
- Project management or project lead experience
- Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology (EET)
- Strong written and verbal communication
Nice to have (not required):
- Professional Engineer (PE) license, or active progress toward one
- Exposure to data center, mission-critical, or large industrial power infrastructure
- Advanced degree in electrical engineering
Logistics:
- On-site in Independence, Ohio — candidates must be local or willing to commute
- Light domestic travel (under 10%) for fieldwork and onsite meetings
- Full-time, salaried, exempt
- Direct hire
